Would you have any interest in a group Rally for Dinos in the USA? This is only a brainstorming exercise to size up how many Dinos could we get and the target trip length would be a week. One idea was that it be a commemorative event with the 50th anniversary of the Dino. Another idea is that it be part of the run up to the 2015 Monterey weekend where Ferrari is the featured marque once every decade and Dinos would show up as a group. - One route that would be easy for me is to put on a wonderful event from Seattle to Monterey; the Cascade Mountains, Great Columbia River, winding roads in Northern California, Pacific Coastal route. - Another possibility would be a route from Denver to Monterey as there is some of the most gorgeous scenery along the way; the Rocky mountains, Bryce & Zion National Forests, the Grand Canyon, Death Valley, Reno, Lake Tahoe and possibly more as these are just ideas now. All comments appreciated Driving as a Dino group is very fun and Dinos are one of the few vintage Ferraris that really are driveable and reliable. Several of us have experience with road failures so we could be prepared and pool our resources to deal with most anything along the way. I have driven the Dino to Monterrey twice And I am going back next year for sure. Would love to see a group drive
Sal and Manny - It would be fun, wouldn't it! From the Dino Club in the EU their itinerary was 3 days, 450km. We, in the Pacific NW, typically do that on the way to Monterey so I'm not so sure how many would be up for that long of a drive. While fine for us, we seem to enjoy driving much more distance than other owners. PS - Cannonball Jack May says he is up for it regardless of the route!
The Dino Club itineraries pale in comparison - hell, what they (the Dino Club) did doesn't even compare to the Cascade Loop tours that we have gone on in Washington State. We have done the trip from Seattle to Monterey EASILY in 2 days - Seattle to Monterey is 909 miles or 1462.89km in 2 days, compared to the Dino Clubs 450km in 3 days - what a bunch of Euro wimps! Round trip from Seattle to Monterey and back is 1,818 miles, or 2925.78km (direct, with no side trips or excursions), which we have done in our Dinos (246GT and 246GTS) 3 times (during the hottest time of the year), and each trip was a beautiful adventure. BTW - do I get royalties for the photos (above) that you took of my Dino???? The 2014 or later trip sound like fun!
Most rallies here in the United States seem to be about 1000 miles (California Mille, Copperstate 1000, Colorado Grand, Going to the Sun, Mountain Mille, etc). For people to ship their cars out for the trip it needs to be worth it...and having a variety of terrain that you could have going to Monterey would be excellent (desert, mountains, coast, etc). The one nice thing with preceding Monterey is everyone gets to participate in one of the world's best car shows at the end...and show their car at Concours Italiano where on the anniversary year there will likely be more Dinos than ever assembled. Many folks will be shipping their Dinos out ANYWAY, so it won't cost them anything to instead ship out to the Pacific NW and ship home from Monterey. I'm looking forward to the "Dino Mille"
If the route through the WA State and OR Cascades into CA wine country is good enough for The Pebble Beach Motoring Classic then it would be great for the Dino Mille! Spreading it out over 4-6 days would be a great, leisurely route and scenic too I was hoping for more votes in the Seattle to Monterey category because it is such a great driving route for the Dino, has Grand Old Lodge accommodations along the way and spreads the drive out into a few hundred miles of backroads (at most) each day. But who knows, if we hold it they might come! Royalties on photos I took? How about, I'll change your radiator fans for free, oh wait - I already did that Ba-Zinga! Four or five days would give a good balance between plenty of great driving, no exhausting days, and cutting off one or two nights of hotel/meal expenses if you did a longer trip. The Pebble Beach Motoring Classic is quite an event, but they have to go MUCH slower since they tend to have a lot of early cars (brass era, etc) mixed in with cars from the 1960s. I think they take 8 or 9 days. One benefit of doing it the first year from Pacific NW to Monterey is not only is there beautiful driving, but there are plenty of route books from previous tours and rallies that could be assembled to give a great tour out of the gate.
beautiful shots, that section was too short I bet, should be run in a loop, just incase something was missed.
what about guys from the East Coast?/ the US is a big place ...not just Calif & the PNW... "Rally across the USA" sounds more expansive than Northern Calif & the PNW....
I would love to try this event I live in Virginia so it is a long way I would probably ship my car to a point along the way midway then fly in and meet up with the group ... I really think Maybe a all the guys from the east coast to meet at a common city and drive from there .We could have our cars shipped by the same company then meet at the same point on the same day ... we would still drive a thousand or 1500 miles............ LarryH
The twisty section you are referring to is The Maryhill Loop Road and is on the East Side of WA State, yes Washington actually has a desert region. Maryhill Loop Road is the oldest paved road in WA State and a historic road that is held privately with gated access on the Columbia River Gorge. I rented it for the day and it made a great destination for the Ferrari group to drive on Saturday. Our Friday driving day down to the Columbia Gorge (where the Maryhill Loop Historic Road is situated) took us through the panoramic "Volcano Section" of WA State. Drivers passed through three regions of changing scenery - Lush rain forest of Western Washington State - The Alpine wilderness mountain areas - The high desert sections of Eastern WA State Many of the Dino, Ferrari, Alfa, Porsche owners said the back roads route was the most fun driving they had ever done and wondered why they hadn't found it before. amazing, thank you for posting, such a vast area so much to see. was going to say, you are lucky....but you are making it your own luck...great stuff
Not so vast, we did it in one leisurely day ith a lengthy lunch stop and many photo ops. Come along and enjoy@!
Four days to get to the CA Wine Country taking all back roads through the Volcano Region as seen in the photos above. Still interested? Ryan - If Scott goes solo, he might have room for a few spare batteries in his trunk . . . . Mark
Fantastic! My Dino will soon be in Carmel, so I'll miss the drive down (but I do have a trunk full of batteries for anyone who needs one when they arrive . My alternator has been fixed after the Copperstate 1000...so I should be good for the Monterey drive back to Seattle.
Added 1 Silver Lamborghini Miura along https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Incz98z6zvI Didn't your alternator fail on a previous CopperState1000 ? smh
It failed about seven years ago on the 2008 Red Rock Rallye in Utah. Same problem: oil drip on alternator eventually caused failure. I bought a drip shield this the Winter, but somehow it has gotten lost and I never installed it. After just rebuilding the alternator we also address the oil leak, but as soon as I find the drip shield I'll be installing.
