I want re-chrome my outside door handles and so to do this I think I need to remove the curvy handle from the operating rod. It looks to me like these two have a pin that holds them together and this pin will need to be drilled out -see photos below -but I am not sure and don't want to cause any damage. Has anyone done this before?

I did this several years ago but buggered if I can remember!!

Did I remove them, I don't think I did! The platers re-chromed while on the shaft, any over plating on the swivel part was just cleaned off.

Tony is correct DO NOT try and remove them from the shaft and have them plated as they are.........you know it makes sense!

I thought that might be the case. I had noticed one is completely chromed and the other isn't so I guess that the one that is chromed has been re-chromed before.

Thanks to Tony & Graham for the sound advice.

I removed the handles prior to chroming but only because the shaft needed to be renewed. I removed the hardened securing pin with a high speed diamond drill and a dremel grinder. Not a job I would recommend to proceed with unless you need to.

    Best regards

Mine had to be refurbished as the shafts were completely rusted.
Made new ones in stainless steel and then replaced the handle after re-chroming.
The bushing was remade out of brass, as it was shot also.

As Peter quite correctly states, not a job for the faint hearted...

    Regards, Alberto
