    What is the thin white material on the fuel tank pads and what is a suitable replacement?
    Looks like scotchbrite.

    I think it is just white felt. Grainger has a synthetic felt that looks just the same.

    Yes, it's some type of durable synthetic felt... I'll stop by grainger with a sample. Thanks.

    Mine are felt also but a bit dirty now although they could have been white.

    Item 2HVC9, page 3056 in the Grainger catalog might be correct. You'll have plenty to spare!

    They had nothing for me to compare, however the original is just plain felt which I went with and the part you quoted is a fine substitute, 1/8" thick. It also optionally comes with an adhesive backing.

    A thin strip of the same felt is used to seal the air cleaner lid (on early cars at least).
    I don't think it's used anywhere else.
