    The trunk hits the closed engine lid so I must always remember to open the engine lid before lifting the trunk lid. Is this typical?

    No, you must have an alignment issue. Both should open freely of each other.

    Check the hinges of the trunk lid. Probably you have "play" in the rivets of the hinges.

    Yes, I found play in the hinges. Can they be rebuilt? New ones are over £300 each.

    you need to remove your hinges and make new bushes or rivets, i make new hinges but they need to be fitted on the car i want to use them on and its not so easy, best is to restore your old one !!

    Yes, you can restore the hinges with new rivets. You need to find a good lathe man to make the new rivets and then install them like the originals. They have a central "punch" to clinch them (sorry for my English, I hope you understand).
