As no suitable substitute are available, I decided that it might be a reasonable solution to take the wrong bumpers from an M series and modify them into the proper ones for the L series.

My only setback is the repro rubber available from Cicognani, as I have been advised that it is being manufactured a tad smaller than the original was.

If anyone has a few spare inches of the rubber profile that they were willing to part with, it would help tremendously in setting the proper gap between top and bottom of bumper.

I hope you enjoy the photos.

There are a few small differences that require to be modified, such as extra holes and reshaping of minor details, grinding welds, polishing and re-chroming.

The interior strips that support the two halves make it an easier assembly than later bumpers, with the added bonus that the mounting brackets are welded to this strip.

Of course, and as usual, this is a project that could never have been carried out without the gracious loan of originals from the usual suspects. Thank you!

    Gracias Alvaro,

    "Set 3.865,70 EUR"

At that price, + shipping + taxes, I would rather make them myself...and I am 100% positive they will fit perfectly :)

    Saludos, Alberto

    Dear Alberto

Good work once again, amazing standard of work and so brave to attempt this.

I believe superformance are stocking the correct profile & material bumper rubber now, the existing stock was simply no good and made from a PVC type material. So they went to another manufacturer who made it out of the correct rubber. I compared a production sample some months ago to the original on my car and as far as I can tell it is identical in shape and size.

Ask for a sample to be sent to make sure as I don't know if the E series cars are the same.

    Tony

    Just as I suspected...

Why go through the trouble of making something new if the results will not be spot on?
I am replicating all from an original set. No excuses there!

Tony, I will try SF. Thank you for the tip and the kind words!

    Regards, Alberto

Alberto, I will look around for a piece of the original rubber but I'm not sure I see the point. If I measure the gap with a micrometer, won't that suffice?

Most likely it would, but I would hate to set it all up and the run into clearance issues as
others have reported. If yours is "original", it appears that the remakes are slightly smaller
as the original rubber that the mould was pulled from, (Cicognani production?) had shrunk ever so slightly over the years.

The ideal, would obviously be to order the whole rubber kit from them, but in the meanwhile, this is delaying the production.

Jon, mention ed he might have some of the re-make rubber. Hopefully he found it.

    Thank you!

    Regards, Alberto

    Did SF help you out?

I am going over there soon and can see if they have a piece. I have about 12" of the stuff here but not sure if it is the same so am reluctant to send it to you.

Let me know and I will see what they have in stock.

    Tony

Tony, that would be great. Please let me know what you find, as what SF shows on their catalogue, is for the 246 only.

Please say hello to Colin for me. I went there once for a visit and they are all very kind people.

Excellent outcome Alberto......I am sure your are left with bumpers that are closer to the originals in fit and appearance and in much better quality than the aftermarket bumpers you might be able to find somewhere - Well done!. Now you just have to ensure to find a good place for polish and chrome.

    Regards Peter

Thank you Peter, you are correct, as the new bumpers are 100% copies of a pair of originals.

    We are very pleased.

By the way, congratulations on your spectacular and detailed restoration.:)

Thank you Andres, I appreciate the comment :)

Do the rear bumpers have the same holes for lights in a 206 as in a 246 L?

I will post pix tomorrow to compare.

    Regards, Alberto
