I noticed today after driving for 20 minutes that the oil temperature gauge was at close to 250F. Outside temp was 75 . Is this normal? What could be wrong?

    Thank you in advance

first thing is to suspect the gauge is wrong.

Did you have good oil pressure when the gauge said 250? If you had normal pressure that would be evidence the gauge is wrong

If you don't have an inexpensive non-contact thermometer, get one. The oil runs thru the heat exchanger on the left side of the engine, where you can measure its temperature directly. see if it agrees with the gauge.

thank you very much. I also checked the oil level and it was at minimum at warm temperature 20 minutes after shut off from a 30 mile run. Could low oil be the cause of it? I would think it does.

    Thanks
