Two 246s being restored. One is a 1970, the other a 1972. Which XWX tires are "show" correct for these; 205 VR 14 or 205/70 VR14? Please advise and thanks. Chaz

Cars belong to a friend in Southern CA. I recall that the 205/70VR14 was/is the same tire as the earlier 205 VR14, and that both will fit the 6.5 and 7.5 inch rims but I won't bet my life on that. However, if that is correct, I simply need to know which label is correct for which year. In other words, when did Michelin transition from the 205 VR14 to the 205/70VR14? It was only 40 years ago, and just because I've forgotten doesn't mean the rest of you are off the hook!!!

At SN 01118, Ferrari was fitting 205/70 VR14 XWXs. Not sure when they began fitting the 205/70s. 206s originally came with 185 VR14 Xs.

Early 246 L series also came with 185 VR14, but these tires are not rated for high speed so some recommends to go for the 205 tires. I'm currently considering if I should buy size 185 and keep the car original or 205 and keep it safe at high speed.....recommendations are received with pleasure....sorry for the hi-jack

Peter- Those 185 VR14s were VR rated for over 130 mph, which ought to cover it for the Dino. Especially considering the Daytona also came with VR rated tires. In 1991 VR changed to reflect a maximum of 149 mph, so newer tires have a maximum speed recommended, where earlier VRs did not, just rated over 130 mph.

Chassis 01616 (UK rhd GT collected from factory 8 March 1971) was road tested in UK 'Motor' 10 July 71.
In the text it says '205XVR Michelin radials'. The specs list says 205/70 VR 14X Michelin.
So the change to /70 must be before this.

Chassis #00714 (246GT L serie delivered on 8th May 1970) was originaly fitted with 205/70 VR 14 Michelin XWX. The book (User Manual) said erroneously 185 VR 14 !

FYI, these early V-rated Michelins were XVRs, not XWXs, as the latter hadn't been introduced yet. Some later Dinos came with Goodyear G800 Grand Prix tires instead- also 205/70X14 (regardless of whether 6.5" Cromodoras or 7.5" Campagnolos).

Thanks, that's interesting information since I only have the information from my user manual. Are there anybody that can verify when the L-series cars went from size 185 to 205 if they used 185 at all?

    Regards

Thanks everybody for the information regarding tire width and speed rating issue related to the early L series cars. Since my car is #504 it should be wearing 185 tires.....All taken into account I think this is what I wote for now.

Although the first cars did fit 185VR14 there isn't a V rated tyre manufactured that i know of. Michelin do make a 185HR14 Michelin MXV-P tyre in that size which if you need to fit that size would be the best

Today i would suggest the 205/70VR14 Michelin XWX it can be fitted to 5.5" rims through to 7.5" and they are W rated (170mph)

a straight 205VR14 tyre was fitted to the 275 GTB and 330GTC & GTS, and is about 1 5/8" taller than a 205/70VR14. This short film about 330 GTS shows the 2 tyres next to each other https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GL7KgqzQBgU . I don't know who that numpty waffling away could be.

In case anyone is new here, I ordered a set of proper tires for my Dino from Longstone in England last year.

This is after Coker would not give me a date code.

I ordered the tires on a Saturday and they were at my door the next Wednesday!

I'm in the southern US, how was that even possible?

They were actually CHEAPER than Coker as well!

They were date coded exactly as Longstone said. less than 6 months out the mold.

    Outstanding company.

I had the same experience with crazy fast delivery...and I'm on the west coast! But before anyone buys from Longstone, be sure to compare the converted USD price...it differs depending on whether you choose GBP or Euro, to the tune of at least a couple hundred dollars for a set (I just don't recall which ends up being cheaper).

    Thank you for your support.

I hope our currency doesn't differ between a couple hundred dollars. If so i need a new battery for my calculator. However there will be a little discrepancy that you may win or lose on. I recomend buying off our site in your currency, if we offer it.

Towards the top, right of our web sites; both Longstone Tyres or our new Borrani.com web site, there is a currency calculator where you can choose your currency. these prices are set and if you want you can calculate them against what your credit card might charge you at the time when your bank deems it best to take it out of your acount. (obviously + a little bit, (blood sucking leaches))

I buy tyres off Lucas Antique Tires in LA now and again. I was discussing how currency exchange rates make it dificult. Wise old Stan Lucas said to me:- "Dougal, if you were clever enough, to be able to predict currency exchange rates; you would not be selling tyres for old cars."

I too had a great experience when I purchased my XWXs from Longstone for my Dino a few years ago. They were informative, lest costly than Coker and the tires arrived very quickly with a recent date code as promised.

Now, if they could just learn how to spell tires over there! ;-)

    Cheers,

    Keith

Amusingly after your postings about our service (thank you for your kind words) i got into a panic because my next 2 deliveries from Michelin got held up in port in Dover and i ran out of stock. But the good news is a lorry full turned up today. so there are plenty in stock today. 205/70VR14 Michelin XWX

Incidentally i have also recieved delivery of the new Michelin tyre guide if anyone would like one. just fill in my free poster page and put in the coments section that you want a Michelin Brochure. Vintage Tires | Longstone Tyres

This is our current poster (by the way. we do not send junk post or emails or any of that clutter that i don't like)
