After rebuilding my '73 246 engine , the oil pressure seems unusually high. The shop manual states that the maximum pressure should be 7,5 kg/cm2. On mine , as I accelerate the needle on the gauge keeps climbing reaching 8-9 kg/cm2 at 5500 rpm. I tried backing out the oil pressure relief screw on the oil filter housing but it did not seem to make a difference. Any ideas on what might be causing this?

It could be the sender. Hook up a mechanical pressure gauge and check it. If it is still high, then you need to find a cause. But, I would confirm first. Good luck.

I second that. Electrical gauges are prone to error. DO NOT decrease your oil pressure based on that gauge.
