Hi there is a 73 Dino gts red/tan #04868 for sale out in Pleasanton, California... It is on eBay right now... Appears to be on consignment and being sold through Classic Cars, Ltd... Doesn't carry much service history... Does anyone know about this car? Thanks

Interesting. My car is #4866 and must have been next to that car on the production line.

I know this car! Belonged to my boss, sold a bit before he passed a few years back. If I remember correctly it was restored over a period of years to a high standard. I think he bought it in the early '80s from Ferrari of Los Gatos and held on to it for the rest of his life. A few rides in that car are what hooked me on the idea of getting my own dino.

Perhaps a high standard but with several glaring incorrect things (steering wheel, cam cover finish, air box cover finish, incorrect tools...).

I should have said "high cosmetic standard". He definitely didn't care much about originality, as you can see from the photos. He was quite a character and the car suited him perfectly. I remember when I first saw it back in 1989 or so and being just blown away by how beautiful a shape the Dino was.

    #04868 would make it a 1972.

    Matthias,

    Thank you for your reply.

Feb. 1973. I bet that is when it came off the production line. I will also bet the door panel says 1972, maybe, Sept. or Oct.

Which brings up a great question, which years ago I asked Ferrari North America. What year do you call a Dino? The year on the door panel or the year it came off the production line. I was told, use the year on the door panel. Just because Ferrari didn't get around to actually making it until 1973, it still should be called a 1972.

I am quite interested in everyone's thoughts.

04798 here. Only 5 cars from yours so very likely they were roomies at the factory.

Thanks everyone for your invaluable input... According to seller's description, the first gear tends to pop out during "hard" acceleration only.... In Dino 246, is it usually a shift linkage issue (usually going in, not popping out) or more possibly an internal issue requiring transmission out? Thanks
