I read on instagram that Ferrari collector mr David Lee is putting 400hp v8 in his 246GTS plus upgrading brakes etc. What is your take on this. I think it is sad that he ruins a classic.

I'm not sure I like it. Which car is the V8 from? If it is from a Ferrari, I don't like it. If it is from a Mustang or similar car, then the man needs a good beating.

Back in the 1980s I put a 308 engine/transmission in a 246. The owner destroyed the original motor and there weren't many options. The car was quick and a ball to drive.

Plenty of original cars around. I am sure a few were converted in the past, as David pointed out, so in a way it can even be historically correct. A lot of fun probably.
imho the engine should be Ferrari.

Hi Fellow, Dinos'istas, we are currently scanning and up-sizing a Campagnolo wheel to 18 inches, we plan to cast a batch of rims which will allow for the fitment of modern rubber to the 328 Outlaw Dinos' we are currently building, obviously if we can garner some interest and up the order numbers the price will come down .......... any interest out there ????? cheers all, Kev.

What's left from a Dino if you deprive it of it's engine? Still a great body, but it's the engine what makes the difference. Moreover, the 328 has not been renowned for it's engine. A Dino engine can also be powered up to 250 horses without any issues if it's only about the power.

Hi Tobi, I love your passion and can see that you deserve an explanation ........ I see you ask " What's left from a Dino if you deprive it of it's engine? please be assured that we are not depriving a Dino of anything .......... We are offering an enhanced experience, advances in technology, performance, handling and manners like you cannot believe !!!! the original engine / transmission is set aside ready for the day of reunification ........ everything is reversible and the objective is to make the conversion look factory, like it grew there !!!!

As for your statement that the " 328 has not been renowned for it's engine"

The Ferrari F40 engine is basically a 328 engine with tubos ???? the F40 engines which we are currently building are giving 700 plus BHP with great driving manners ........ we could go for more power which we know to be there !!!!! so I guess it's pretty safe to say that the 308 series engine was pretty sound and that it was able to deliver beyond expectations .......

As for your statement that "A Dino engine can also be powered up to 250 horses without any issues if it's only about the power"

Well for some people 250 BHP is not enough ........

Some people want 400 BHP and that for us is a great challenge which we can't resist and that is why need to fit up-rated brakes, wheels and tyres, part of this challenge is to produce a discrete set of 18 inch Campagnolo wheels which clear the larger brake calipers which will be necessary to tame this beast and which will suit the best tyres available.

The new Dino will, according to the rumour mill have a V8 and 400 BHP and I doubt that it will be running on 1970s Michelin XWX tyres, there is room for all tastes and types in this world, IMHO there is nothing worse than to be a victim of group thought, I like to think that I think for myself ........

I hope this explains everything, kindest regards, Kev. ps, is there interest in this project ????

Thanks for explaining this in detail, Kev. It's great that you make the conversion reversible - that soothes a bit. I'd still go for an original 246 and a 488 (or other decent modern sports car) side by side instead of your project if I could or would have to choose ;-)
I'm also curious if and when a new Dino will come. I expect an engine with specs similar to the Giulia QV with a little extra HP.
Don't let my conservative comments stop you keeping us up to date with your project here ;-)

Hi Kev, I think that what you are producing is awesome! Specially the fact that it is all reversible to original...

My my, how times have changed, a few years back I purchased a QV motor for my second Dino and it was considered blasphemy. This, particularly from a most famous
Ferrari specialist, that shall remain nameless, told me I ought to buy a Corvette.

What struck me most, was the viciousness and bile that came out from him.
I guess, either he does not read anymore these threads, or old age has mellowed him a bit and all of a sudden has realized that "times are a'changing."

No one is destroying any cars here. :) and certainly don't wish to stir a hornets nest, as I am fully behind ambitious, and creative projects.

Definitely, I am interested in the wheels Kev, please keep us abreast.

    Regards, Alberto

I think this is an interesting endeavor. By keeping the donor engine a Ferrari also, it's still an "all-in-the-family" Ferrari project. History has been kind to Frankensteined sports cars, as Allard, Lister and some others were built with Jaguar, Cadillac etc. motors. But the best and most valuable example of all must be the Shelby Cobra; take a previously existing British car, stuff an American V-8 in it, wait 35 years, and make $600,000!
Best of luck with your project!

Many thanks for your words of encouragement Guys, I'm really excited about this project, we have already done the groundwork with my own 328 Gts which is currently giving 300 Bhp ........ using the knowledge gained so far we are confident that we can easily surpass this figure and by using the latest Motec ECU deliver an even better package .......... cheers all and kindest regards, Kev.

Yes Alberto, I too once had a rigid and blinkered outlook on life ( it could well have been me castigating you regarding your QV plans ) so you are right when you say we are mellowing .......... and given Ferrari's own cynical treatment of their brand it's not surprising that we move with the times, after all, who could have foreseen Bob Dylan being awarded a Nobel prize ???? keep an open mind and stay " Forever young" ;-} cheers Kev. ps, I have noted your interest in the wheels.

Kev, no, it was not you that 'castigated ' me with my QV project, it was more a USA type, and albeit you are (were) a rigid type, you would never have been so crass as the one that chastised me. I was simply appalled at the bad manners and uncouthness.

He knows perfectly well who he is, but his might and demi-God attitude was way out of line. Just a bad day at the office/wife/dog...I am not one to bear grudges, simply ignore and let it slide.

    Just ranting away...:)

Thank you for note on your wheels.

    Regards, Alberto

Hi Team, thought I'd post some photos of the manifolds we are currently making which will facilitate the fitting of throttle bodies to V8 engines, the photos show the plastic rapid 3D tooling we have had made for development purposes ......... once we are happy we will have the manifolds CNC machined up in solid alloy, is there anyone else doing a Dino Gt4 up-grade or a 328 Outlaw Dino out there who might be interested ???? cheers as ever, Kev.

Hi Team, please see by my attached photos that our green 3D printed prototype manifolds have now been machined from alloy, they will allow us to fit Jenvey throttle bodies to the re-ported 328 cylinder heads, I have to say they are a work of real micro finished beauty !!!!! more photos to follow as we progress, cheers all, Kev.

A 328 engine was being used at this point then? It's interesting that during all the test drive coverage, we now hear that it is an F40 engine. When was the change made?

Does anyone know more about this? Keen to understand why the 328 engine was swapped out for an F40 engine (if the coverage is accurate), especially this far into the build...
