The rejuvenation of # 02986

Late last year I started my quest for a Dino. I was looking for a well preserved example that had been loved and cared for through the years which would not need a full restoration.

By reaching out to this Forum, I was able to purchase a two owner, mostly original car.

Over the past couple months I've spent approx, 150 hours improving the car and raising it to a higher level. I'd like to share the progress so far.

On my first drive I lost the entire under tray due to some shoddy rivet. This started a long process of grinding, sanding, and treating the frame with POR-15 rust paint. Thank you to Superformance for having the replacement undertray available.

More sanding of surface rust and old rust coating. The good news is it was all solid underneath. Thank you California !!!

Next came fluid changes, which leads to the next set of obstacles.

The gearbox fill plug was seized. A torch, penetrant, and impact wrench did nothing but strip the nut. A friend finally got it out with a chisel and hammer by extracting the washer first. I'm sure this had something to do with the aweful color gear oil.

With clean gear oil, I moved on the coolant, motor oil, and brake fluid. Coolant and oil went perfectly, but while changing a rubber brake line, a metal brake line was twisted in half.

To get to the brake line junction, the heat shield separating the trunk from the engine had to be removed. Many screws and rivets later, it was out ! But, the heat shield was corroded in some places. So, the next repair was made.

I ended up cleaning, and rebuilding the rear calipers. The fronts had already been done recently.

There was also a ton of oil on the engine and air horn which I was able to remove with the heat shield out

I wanted to inspect the accessible areas of the car for rust, so out came the tail lights for inspection and cleaning.

One thing I hated was the aftermarket side mirror. Luckily the original was included, but I had to open up the old screw hole which had been filled when the car got painted in 1978.

The aftermarket steering wheel had to go too. Once again I was lucky to have the original.

Much better !

Mouse hair cleaned with a wet towel. Looks very flat when wet, but was perfect once dry.

After researching rust sprays for non-accessible areas for POR-15, I decided on Fluid Film.
