There is an elaborate air intake valve tied to oil pressure within the airbox. Does anyone know, since most people have this disconnected as I, why was this necessary to begin with?

It was necessary to meet evaporative emissions limits.
Apparently, after the car was stopped, too much of the fuel in the carburetors evaporated through the air cleaner. By adding this flap which closed off the air cleaner intake to the atmosphere when the engine stopped, Ferrari was able to meet the evaporative emissions standard.
