Ferrari CEO Sergio Marchionne said there are split views within the automaker's management on whether to revive the Dino nameplate for an entry-level sports car. Not everyone is convinced it would be a good move, he said.

The idea of reviving the Dino is being "kicked around," Marchionne said on a call with analysts to discuss the automaker's second-quarter financial results.

Marchionne said it would be dangerous to lower the entry level price for a Ferrari.

He also said he was unsure whether a cheaper Ferrari is necessary to attract younger buyers since the brand has a "phenomenally young" customer base in Asia who can afford the brand's expensive cars.

"We need to explore ways to attract customers to traditional values of the brand such as style, performance and engine sound before downgrading the entry level price for the brand," Marchionne said.
Though it's OK to dilute the brand with an SUV.

very strange as there are several test mules of the car travelling around, meaning that they already developed the car: it would have been a waste of money and a lot of confusion about the factory market strategy

In any case, as an enthusiast, I would prefer a new Dino rather than the SUV

ciao

Do not worry. Ferrari have officially stated that they are NOT going to make a SUV.

Then they should let Alfa or Maserati build a lower cost 2 seat sports cars to attack the Audi, McLaren 570s, and the new Mid Engine Corvette.

They could use the twin turbo V6 motor from the Maserati Ghibli.

Just don't put the Ferrari badge on it like they did in 1969.

To me they are leaving money on the table but I guess they can sell all the 488's they want so better not to undercut their existing product than expand it. But I think the Mac 720s will hurt if its as good as people claim.

I wasn't planning on buying a new Dino anyhow. Nothing can be as beautiful as what we already have.

Absolutely. The 4C was an attempt at that but I think it probably needs to be a bit more. Yes a Maserati or an Alfa could do that.

Ferrari haven't forgotten the hard lessons learned with the "Dino" 308GT4.

Ferrari has changed its position on this, nothing is more important to the brand than profit. Remember that Jaguar also once said it would never build an SUV. See here:

Recent rumblings have suggested Ferrari is considering a utility vehicle that will help double its profits by 2022. Now, Ferrari CEO Sergio Marchionne has confirmed it’s a strong possibility.

“It will probably happen but it will happen in Ferrari style,” Marchionne said on a conference call, reports Bloomberg. “That space is too big and too inviting and we have a lot of our customers who will be more than willing to drive a Ferrari-branded vehicle that has that king of utilitarian objective.”

So why was it produced from 1974 to 1980?

You miss the point. It sold better with the Ferrari badge.

Ferrari learned the car sold better as a Ferrari than a Dino. The same goes today.

That might be correct. But why not name it 'Ferrari 306 GT Dino'?

You might be right....who knows?

But I am just quoting the Chief Marketing and Commercial officer Enrico Galliera, who recently said: "Ferrari is about consistency, feel, racing and emotion. Consistency, because for 70 years there has been a single objective - to build the worlds greatest high-performance sports cars. Feel, because speed alone doesn't make a Ferrari, there has to be the sensation that you only get from a genuine low slung sports car - which is why we'll never build a SUV". The quote is from the magazin Classic & Sports car, "70th anniversary special, summer 2017.

Best Peter

Marchionne is calling the shots. If he wants an SUV, he'll get one. I'd expect a sportier competitor to the Bentley Bentayga.

People will still buy the sports cars. In fact once the SUV is Ferrari's volume seller it'll pad the way for more sports car development, hopefully including that Dino we all want.
