Just out of interest does anyone have a vague idea? think they look stunning in Yellow.
The fifth prototype was originally Rosso Corsa, but then it was repainted yellow by the factory before being sold to their official dealership, Motor SRL, in Modena. Today, it's in North America. No GTO ever left the factory in any color other than red, except for this one (47649). This car also had manual windows and no air conditioning, until it was later given a/c and power windows by the factory (at which point it was repainted yellow). It came up for sale at the RM/Sotheby's auction at the factory in May, 2007 (lot 224). Here's an excerpt from the ad: "It is one of the four[sic] developmental cars built by Ferrari before production of the 288 GTO began. Two of these four were used for crash tests and subsequently destroyed. Another one was disassembled and sold as spare parts to a Ferrari customer who had crashed his car. Chassis 47649 thus remains the only development car in existence[sic] and its prototype status is the reason it is not listed as one of the 272 production examples built. The car was owned by Ferrari until 1987 when a special Ferrari customer succeeded in buying it. It has the very desirable four-point seat belts and fire extinguishing system, both of which were required for testing. It has just 9,650 km, almost all of which were undertaken by Ferrari test drivers." In actuality, there were six prototypes; and there's at least one other one that wasn't destroyed.
NNO do you know if the 4(ish), gto's left the factory red, then sent to pinnin, for RHD conversion, and paint, then sent to Brunei. were part of the 272 production cars. Or are they "extras"? thanks. Karl.
Hi, Karl... 55671: black with a red stripe on the side of the body, RHD conversion; 56641: red(?), still LHD as far as I know; 56655: Indian blue, still LHD as far as I know; 57727: black, still LHD as far as I know, the Sultan was not the original owner; 79889: GTO Evo, LHD; alleged to be the last of five Evos, but I have a sixth Evo that is chronologically later. These are all included in the 288 (I have 288, not 272), and are not extras.
NNO, Any pics of this GTO? Here is a pic I found online of 47649, it looks pretty good in yellow. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Carbon, You're amazing dude. I have a bunch of pics from Pocono in the mid 80's of what I believe to be a GTO(at least it had an inline engine and the same trans case that are so cool looking from behind on real 288's) in silver. Any info. I'll throw some pics up when I can. They were slides and I'll have to scan them. Thanks Bob
Have long been hoping to see a picture of this blue 288 GTO. Same goes for the Swaters blue F40 LM that supposedly exists in a private collection.
you mean this one? ***Copyright asserted by Marcel Massini - do not repost without his permission and retention of copyright notice.*** Image Unavailable, Please Login
That's really neat - thanks. Have not seen that one before. As for the other one, there was a model maker on here years ago who made a 1:43 Swaters blue F40 LM for the owner of the real car. I have always wanted to see a picture of the real one. Would love to know which LM it is. How did it end up Swaters blue? What, if any, was its race history? Curious story. Thanks.
allthough the picture turned up in a simple google imagesearch ("blue F40") and was posted on an (for me) unknown forum, the copyright is claimed by Marcel Massini. The picture of the TdF F40 was taken be me, so no infringements there.
Technically, it is indeed a post-production repaint from red to yellow, albeit by Ferrari affiliate Pinninfarina. They also added a passenger door mirror. Exceptional info, correct, but speak to Marcel Massini and he will assure you there are not 288 cars, even including the Evos. The 272 number that was officially declared did not include the Evos.
Bob, this was the car you saw, driven by a gentleman with impeccable taste, one Sam Bardor. Alas, it is now red again! Image Unavailable, Please Login
I always wondered who added it! It was spotted without one, then spotted a little while later with it. Thanks. Can you confirm six Evos and not five?
Ferrari of Houston had a Silver 288 in their showroom for many years in the 80's....Is this the same car? I always thought the display was an original silver car due to when it first appeared and how long it was there.
Yes. Sam Bardor is the original owner of 2 288 GTOs, 54225 & 56335. Circa 1985. Both are here in the USA and are back-to-red cars.
I remember a silver 288 GTO in Mexico by an owner who ones also an BB in silver and one or two other childs from Maranello in silver. Is this Sam Bardor?
