I understand that the answer to this question may not be something that can be portrayed succinctly, but I can't seem to find definitive demystifying answers anywhere. What are the difference between these legendary cars? Did they evolve from each other, or were they all separate projects? If anyone can help me out with this, it'd be really appreciated. Thanks a lot :)

I am not an expert and I am not a great connoisseur, surely some of the boys here will answer you with more detail but I understand that the F40 LM were the cars developed for the IMSA GTO championship 1989 and 1990, with around 700 HP and they could have up to 800 HP for qualify laps. The F40 GT were developed for Italy Supercar GT 1992, 1993 and 1994 these had factory aerodynamics and ailerons and about 600 HP.
The F40 GTE were the most extreme developed for the BPR GT1 and the 24 hours of Le Mans 1994, 1995 and 1996.
Here is a complete archive of all the races in which the different versions of F40 participated
