Quick question for those more experienced than me... Is the lower perch of the shock supposed to come off over the shock eye with the bushing in place? Mine is close but I really don't think it will come over the shock eye with the bush in place. In every photo I have seen of the Konis with a spring compressor on them, the bush seems to still be in place. I am thinking my shocks have the wrong bushes in them (too wide). Thanks in advance David
Wayne Thanks for the fast response. That makes sense now. This is not what you call "fully pressed in". Image Unavailable, Please Login Looks more like a ****ed up mess.
When you press in the new ones they will prutrud a little but not that much. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Well I feel like a proper idiot now After 20 minutes wrestling with the stupid perch, I put the shock down on the bench, on its side and the perch literally fell off over the eye... Image Unavailable, Please Login Next step... Send to Koni for rebuilding. Thanks for the help.
Just a suggestion. Koni will most likely not replace the bushings. You may want to remove them prior to sending.
Good point. I will check again because its a few months since I spoke to them but when I discussed it they mentioned removing the old bushes to media blast and then respray the bodies and afterwards would push in either their own bushes or ones I supply. Their bushes are quite pricey so I intend to order a set from Maranello Concessionaires in the UK and provide those as they are reasonably priced.
Here's an extract from their proposal which includes replacing the bushings: "The price to rebuild the KONI Ferrari shocks is $140/ea. plus parts. Parts generally range $50-$80 per shock as well depending on the condition. If the shocks also need new bushings bushing can cost anywhere from $50-$60/pc depending on their size" Total per shock using their bushings would then seem to be $240 - $280.
Shocks are straightforward to remove from the car. At the front it's simplest to disconnect anti roll bar and tie rod ends and then remove the arms while still connected to the forks that go through the chassis rail. At the rear you need to support the drive shafts, hubs, brake disk and calipers once you disconnect the shock. You might find your bushes need refurbishing or replacing while you are in there. Coils just need a spring compressor.
Rod. I see your in S Derbyshire. I am Lincolnshire way. I have removed the shocks many times, to be honest i have fully rebuilt my car, so pretty good knowledge of them for last 20+ yrs.if you need any help.or advice fell free to give me a shout. Gav
