    Enzo Ferrari is famously quoted as saying that he thought the Jaguar E-type was the most beautiful car in the world. It is a legendary line, oft quoted, but never explained.

    What is the context in which he said this? Was it a thoughtful analysis where he explained WHY he thought it was most beautiful? Or, was it just a simple throwaway line, uttered after too many glasses of Lambrusco? And, what year did he make this famous pronouncement?

    Did he ever say that he thought he bested the E-Type in some of the ensuing Ferrari designs?

    You'll have to help me here.

    All I can find in your reference is a reiteration of the quotation, 'On its release Enzo Ferrari called it "The most beautiful car ever made".' The citation in Wiki is from a 1964 Classic Car Review article by Sean Curtis.

    Actually, Ferrari was a big Lambrusco fan. Have you ever tried that stuff???!!?? Obviously an old school beverage; before Coca Cola made inroads in Italy.

    Ask Rob (BLACKHORSE) about Lambrusco. I brought 3 bottles to his birthday party.

    We bought a $25 bottle of dry Lambrusco from an experienced wine merchant in the La Spezia area. He was from the Modena area and took our request very seriously.

    Good Lambrusco is interesting; unlike most reds which have tannin to clear the pallet with rich food, Lambrusco has carbonation. Very different, but I could see how it could be quite nice (although my wine connoisseur sister-in-law found it just plain weird).

    But back on topic: What was the context in which Enzo Ferrari uttered his famous words about the E-Type?

    Enzo lived another 25 years after the supposed quote. In all that time he never confirmed that statement? That is because he never made it! This legend belongs with Washington and the cheery tree.

    I was standing next to him when he said it at the 1961 E-type introduction (hee heee, maybe not).. hense the beautiful design for the 250 GTO in 1962.

    I don't know about the E-Type. I had one for a few years and could never find an angle of view that did not show some significant flaw. But the 308, now that car still holds the title of being the last beautiful Ferrari.
