I'm looking to buy a new one of these as I think it will be more cost effective than trying to retrim the existing one, can someone point me in the best direction to look?

The one on Superformance will do at a pinch, but it doesn't quite look the same as my original Momo one.

I'm in the UK if that makes a difference.

The Superformance steering wheel looks identical as far as I can tell to the one on my '74 GT4.
Did the steering wheels change design during the life of the GT4?

Except the SUPERFORMANCE doesn't have the MOMO engraved in it.

Probably because they don't want to get sued by MOMO.

On the other hand, buying a NOS one eliminates that issue.

But it does raise the ante just a bit.

Best maybe to live without the MOMO? Save the original wheel and put it on when/if you're headed to a concours, otherwise drive with a nice replacement steering wheel.

I bought a replacement some years ago that HAD the MOMO logo on it, I just can't recall where. It was about $1000.00. Oh, I think I remember. I may have purchased it from La Scuderia Rossa, and I would not recommend doing that now.

I've just had to go out to the garage and check my steering wheel as I didn't realise mine had MOMO engraved into the vertical spoke. :)

I've got that one from Superformance and it is NOT quite the same.
Keep the original and restore it.

    Best wishes

+1 Assuming that its only the leather that is the issue, I would either restore or recover. My leather was nasty when I bought the car but I restored it very well with the Leatherique kit (yes I lost the white stitching but I can live with that for now)

Much nicer than a reproduction wheel in my opinion.

Before and after shots can be seen here for those interested in the Leatherique kit: Steering wheel re-dye ? 308 Restoration

The photo of the Superformance one looks like the leather is more matt and more padded, the stitching more white than mine, and as you say it doesn't say 'momo'.

I can probably get momo engraved on it fairly easily, so if that's the main differnce I'll probably go for that.

The trimmer I spoke to didn't think the stitching style would be easy to replicate and thought the padding would be a problem if he tried to remove and replace it. The alternative was to pad over it lightly. But at four grand (even in USD) I think I'd prefer to leave it original and use something less worthy for day to day.

246s are nice little cars but the market for something that's not as nice to use as a 308gt4 is just a joke ;-)

My GT4 came with a replacement Momo Prototipo steering wheel which is pretty much identical to the original but with a slightly thicker leather rim which does in fact make it a bit easier to grip.

Luckily the car also came withe the (rather worn) original wheel which I may or may not one day restore. I have seen examples of the worn leather very effectively restored.

I guess you'd be 88 on that speed display if it weren't for the thing in front of you ....

    Looks a nice result.

I am restoring a Daimler's (the Jaguar Mk2 V8 one) seats with furnitureclinic products (which sound very similar) and it works very well. They have splits and all, but can still be made serviceable although not new.

But since the rest of the 308 interior is being renewed, the steering wheel will probably look a bit out of sync.

The steering wheel in the picture is not as the original, the gt4 steering did not change in the years , the superformance steering is just identic to original.

You are right. It's a long time since I looked at my original wheel. Maybe I will restore it and swap them over.

    All the original ones are.
There is also a Date Stamp on the back, that matches your car..

I vote for a recover also....lots of places do it.

    Hi Francis,

As a first poster would you please do me a favour? Could you please take a measurement on your old wheel?
I'd like to know the distance between the two parallel stitching lines.
The one I'm working on this week arrived in a bits (cover separated and in bits) so can't work this out
Thanks in advance, your kind help will greatly appreciated.

    Hi AB

Not exactly sure what measurement you mean, but happy to help. PM me your phone no and we can discuss it. Or we can meet and I can show you my wheel.

Send it to Mark Wallach in NY

I'm very good friends with the gentleman who bought his business, tho he still assists, and Mark's considered the NorthEast authority on steering wheel rebuilds (IMHO)

I'm sure Mark does a great job but there is a certain reluctance from over here to send irreplaceable items that far away.

I've bought a Superperformance one for the time being, which looks quite nice. Not sure I'd want to sent to the US as customs etc is always a bit of a faff, so will look to find someone in the EU in the next year or two before the shutters go down and we go back to the dark ages.

This is the distance I'd like to know (here is 11mm but look wide a bit for me).
Theres an original cover (i'm sure it's not off this wheel because it's so loose on it) not good for any reference.
    Hopefully images attached
