My guess is that Brian (Rifledriver) meant the number 2 US model. Remember that the assembly numbers are given in different series for the different market models, and for each variant (GTB and GTS).
There are at least a hundred euro 328 before yours, in the 59xxx range. First euro GTB (#1) is owned by F-Chatter Elentinos in Holland. But we know of a pre-production GTB, # 56211, well before that.

Sadly for me that seems like that is the case. Mine has assembly "2" stamped on it so I am guessing it was the second 328 for the US market or maybe the second GTS. In any case, still something fun to learn.

Probably over 200 prior cars but all European versions.

Ferrari for several reasons distributes all the early cars close to home. In fact I was once told Germany is the target market for very early cars.

All that kind of information is a work in progress but finding cars like yours helps to figure it all out. As far as the GTB/GTS question, the first 3 VINs I have was the one Spider built then 2 GTB's. It was a long time until another GTB was built. Everyone wanted GTS's.

Still very cool bit of information, and beautiful 328 you have there! Would not be too disappointed. Not sure from a driving standpoint if owning the first of any production vehicle is as sweet as it seems, Haha! In many ways equal to a backhanded compliment. :)

To my knowledge #60053 is the 219th 328 built. And the 217th GTS.
Excepting GTS #59317, all are European type.

BUT, I don't have all confirmed....

No KMH is Kevin M Hill the service manager and Dave Hellman bounced back and forth between parts and service. Mine would be the check off pages for the Pre Delivery Inspection.

On the driver's side engine bay frame rail of my 1988.5 328 GTS, what is my assembly number?

Please pardon the upside down image; FChat flipped it!

I never signed off on them because there is a section asking if the owner was shown how to operate the car. That is why I have said several times I filled them out but did not sign off.

I would never had any reason to make entries in any other part.

Since we think about 2448 of the 328 Series 2 GTS were produced from Jan88 (~76626) to the end of production in Oct89 (~83136), I guess that my September 1988 sample would make sense to be about the 1200th one produced that year, so I presume my assembly number is 1217, but what is meant (if anything?) by the clearly intentional space between the digits?

Your assembly number would be sequenced in a serie specific to the US-market version. There would be another serie specific to the Swiss market version, another to the "euro" market version; probably another one to RHD cars...

Yes, that makes sense, and thanks for bringing that into the discussion again, because it helps us to understand the bigger picture of how Ferrari actually built and documented our cars....

With respect to the number actually stamped on my car, being a September 1988 car, it wouldn't make sense to be a number as low as #217 (ignoring the separate "1"), since the car with that low number would have been assembled much earlier in the year. So, I assume my number must be 1217, but I'd like to know if there's any reason why there is such a large space between the numbers? Could the "1" designate something specific, like, maybe which market the car was destined for?
