Amazing how much nicer the car rides with the 16's. Putting the cromodoras in storage :) The steering is also 100% easier at low speeds. Nice upgrade although I do like the look of the 14 cromodoras they are in serious need of refurb...[IMG][IMG]

they look better and work much and much better: the biggest improvement are the contemporary tires you can install on the 16".

    ciao

The GT/4 was available with sixteens late in its production run so the mod isn't unauthentic.

I always liked the look of the 16" wheels on the gt4, especially on silver cars!

Nice! What wheels are they? Superformance?

Mine had 16" wheels fitted when I bought it. I think they look better and certainly the modern tyres are much better and more affordable.

I've no desire to retrofit 14s

Mine has 16" split rims on it at the moment not sure what type they are. They have centre caps too. Does give it a more aggressive look.

Not sure yet whether I'll revert to the original rims.

The only downside is that with modern rubber the car no longer handles as designed. It loses a bit of delicacy.

I c n't comment as I never had 14 inch, but it handles pretty nicely on 16 inch. Not the same - maybe better - who knows!

Humm. It used to be (until good 14" tires went extinct) that the standard deadpan response in BMW Tech Talk to the question about what to do with 14" rims after upgrading to 16" rims was, "use them as your track wheels." In that range, the assertion was that a few psi of tire pressure affected handling more than profile.

What colour are you going to paint it Dusty. Not red please! What was original colour?

    Wheels are OK.

Mine has 16" Compomotive split rims and slightly stiffer springs/dampers. It's still too soft for the track but just soft enough for the road, and it handles a lot better and feels a lot sharper than the original 14" XWXs.

If you want to drive it, stick with the 16"s.

The bigger wheels and newer rubber certainly grip better.
But one of the nice things about an older car is being able to explore its limits without visiting the track.

I don't think your really want to explore a GT4's limits on the road. There is an awful lot of weight behind you and once it lets go it's pretty hard to get back.

    Trust me.

With the sixteens and modern rubber breakaway is sudden and at high speed. With fourteens and period tires it's more predictable, manageable, and fun.
    Been there.

Don't try it with XWXs in the wet.
