I have never touched the top or fluid and I just assumed it worked as it should. It would stop short of closing all the way and in thought that's what it did

Well it was acting a bit tired recently, different than it had do I checked the fluid. Oops!!! It was close to empty.

Added fluid to the Max line, 2 or 3 cycles and wow. It now closes all the way to the windshield and overall moves faster

Add that to the annual list now. Check your fluid levels!

But where does that fluid go?

Well if something is evaporating it is most assuredly leaving behind non evaporative residue which might explain over time the need to flush and clean the system due to viscosity
