Got a call from the shop that is doing the timing belt change on my 348 ts. They would like me to come into the garage tomorrow so they can "go over a few things" with me that need attention.

I think I just heard my wallet sobbing.

Better for them to be thorough than proceed without care, especially if they are willing to show you everything in person.

    I know. I get that.

But I would be lying if I said I didn't feel a chill in my checking account.

His words: "A bracket is broken and needs to be replaced, and some of your lines need to be addressed, as well."

None of that actually sounds ridiculous, but this IS Ferrari we're talking about.

I mean, I'll pay it, and be glad that the issues were addressed, but I'm still dreading the bill.

Those lines are getting old, David. In the couple of months prior to my last major service two years ago, I saw one F355 Challenge split an oil line and another split a fuel line with a resultant engine fire. My own F355 Challenge split the upper right angle coolant hose just behind the firewall. My techs were able to replace it at the track.

I didn't wait for any recommendations. I instructed my shop to replace all oil lines, fuel lines, and coolant hoses in addition to anything else they found needed to be done during the major service.

I'm doing all my 348 fuel lines new with AN fittings and adjustable regulators
20+ year old hose needs replacement period

I'll send you a set on my silicone / nomex hoses to try out for the 355 soon as I get the production run. :)

Yup, as I've dug into my own service, I've found a handful of hoses that were ready for replacement. A few bucks, but in the comparative $ sense, nothing to worry about. If you were planning and budgeting on going deep to begin with, I wouldn't expect too much of a $ shock relative to scope creep.

Maintenance and repair costs on a Ferrari need to be taken into consideration prior the purchase of one, not after.

    Lesson learned.

Part of the problem was a lack of due diligence on my part and a less-than-honest seller. Pricey lesson, but one I'll never forget

Okay, so I had a meeting with the shop. In addition to the timing belt, they want to do the following:

    Water pump
    Tensioner bearings (two)
    Valve cover gaskets
A handful of hoses and lines

I told the guy to order from Ricambi, which saved $500+ on the water pump alone. The damage to my wallet wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.

Really sounds like the basics for a "major" service and not just a belt change. I had no service records so I replaced the water pump on my first major just for peace of mind but now I won't change it every time.

I'd figure those parts to pretty much be a given in a service to the timing belt.

When they call you and say there's a loud whining noise coming from your gearbox that needs to be addressed......that's when you can soil your shorts😨

That all should have been on the "to-do" list anyway. No harm here.

Paint the valve covers while they are out. (Psssst. Bradan will do them if you send them there, and they are exceptional when completed).

Is the water pump bad, or do they want to replace "just coz" ?

Exactly. Nothing on that list that shouldn't have been in the original estimate.

Hopefully they're adjusting the valves at the same time.

Also, if your car was built before the bearing update or if it's approaching 50k miles the bearings in the front cover and the pads for the oil pump and timing chain tensioners should be replaced.

As you may or may not know, the waterpump is driven by the cam belt on the 348, so its bearings are critically important. Also, some pumps came with plastic impellers that self-destruct after a number of heat cycles. Replacement with a metal impeller pump is certainly the safest route, although I'm not sure I'd switch out a low mile pump with a metal impeller if its bearings were super smooth.

There's a little seepage around the bearing, so they are replacing it as a precaution.

Those were all done at a $12K major service in 2007 at 54K miles. I have the receipts.

    That's excellent!

Hope they're still checking/adjusting the valves though.
