Doesn't look like there's any printing left on the back of that belt. Either the shoes were contacting the belt itself or one or more bearings are bad somewhere. Or both...

Fortunate that it was found in time. Pity about the broken belt cover though.

LOL, More than just that! the 'shoes' were installed backwards and they have no clearance on the timing belt, its just dragging on them ;)

D'oh. I didn't catch the fact that they're installed backwards, although it's obvious now. From the rubber dust in the cover I kinda figured they were touching the belt though. Someone else here found the latter problem when he changed his belt, but I'm pretty sure his shoes were installed the right way 'round.

So, it's been that way since the last service. How long has that been? 3, 5 years or more? Just goes to show how tough the belts really are.

The customer just bought the car over internet for a kind of a low price...
It came without any previous maintenance records.

Strange how the cam cover mounting lug was so mangled. Like that was the last screw left, then someone got impatient and ripped the cover off the rest of the way.

My belt was blistered when I purchased my car. 1st thing I did was engine out. Problem there was belt rubbing on shoe. This should really be a check as part of every service for belt wear due to incorrect she gap or for any movement or stretch of belt that could lead to this

Maybe it is just the lighting of the photo, but it looks like the inside portion of the shoe is missing. It should be almost as wide as the cam belt.

It's definitely the light... sorry picture was kind of dark but the shoe still in good shape. The owner of the car was very lucky and smart to do service after buying the car without any kind of records.
