While surfing the net I came across this 348 with ITBs on it. Not only that but it also has coil on plugs, which to me means it's running a stand alone ecu. The only thing I don't know is what kind of power it's making. My guess is something north of 400hp. I also wonder how high he is revving it and what ITBs he used.

    Anyhow, it's a sweet setup.

Ah ha! It does belong to that 348, the RAUH-Welt BEGRIFF 348. The fender flares are done so well.

I wonder if anyone in can find out what it puts down on the dyno. Looks like the plates are from Germany, but the car is in Japan. But wait a minute, looks like they just had those plates on for the car show.

Dude...no way in Germany would get you a plate that says 1048 STYLE. haha. Those are just cheapo vanity plates.

So I found the shop associated with the car. Sent them an email asking about it. They haven't dyno'd it, but the guy did say it's running a Motec ECU, and that is is faster than a standard 348. That my friends is my next upgrade! Ditch the old dual Motronic ECUs and go with a stand alone unit that can be tuned.

Think I'm gonna go with Megasquirt. It's an affordable ecu and it has a big online community.

That is Sy's former engine. DeeGee has it now. It's also a uniqued block, a F129 which is what is used in a 355. However it is running a single belt like what is used on the F119. It is definitely a very rare engine.

It not the ecu, its the ability to tune the engine that gives the bump in power. In his case he may have even raise his rev limiter to 9000+ rpm??? You can make more hp spinning the engine faster if your intake system, heads, cams, etcetera can support it.

Yes I understand but I think he was talking about simply tuning the motec vs stock ecu and all else being stock so I guess the stock setup can support it :D

Hi Ernie, I went Megasquirt on the Miata and had Shawn Church tune it. The pros of using a Megasquirt are that it is a relatively low cost ECU, and on the Miata there was a plug-and-play version. I have not tried using the auto-tune software yet, but those who have say that it's a decent way to get your car running well enough to drive it down to a local tuner. With all of that said, the AEM standalone is about 25% more expensive and my co-worker who runs one (also on a Miata) says the AEM support for peripherals (digital dash, forced-induction conversions, etc) is much stronger. Next time you are out here, you can drive my little 1.8L terror. 146hp to the rear wheels. It broke Shawn's dyno, LOL!

    Yuuup megasquirt, ITBs Say Vroom

Stock ecu does not have enough cpu power it just "buffers" like a video with a bad connection. I tried modding it along with some of the biggest names in the game. Just hit the wall.
Its good for headers, exhaust and a bump in rail pressure before it chokes. Stock ecu 318-320 at the rear wheels is the limit with that setup

To be fair, that's not bad at all for a late '80s/early '90s 3.4 liter engine though.

Right on Greg. I'll hit you up once I land and we can go for a beer, or two, or three. ;) Shawn is a fantastic tuner. I have done loads of pulls at his shop.

That was the deciding factor Tim. As much as you wrestled with those dual Motronics and couldn't get it to work, that was it for this kid. Time to bring my engine management system into the 21st Century.

I'm starting to lean towards motec. If I'm going standalone I want to be able to split hairs. Still need to explore the hardware of the ecus. Want to have pleanty left on the table so it runs at 10-20% duty not 40-50% like so many do

Yeah I guess. When it hits the wall it just pukes and goes flat, poor old ecu's LOL
