Hi Everyone, So I had my F430 up on the ramps with all the undergarments off (I was doing a full exhaust swap out for the Fabspeed package, minus tips ... I'll do a thread on this soon as I have trolled F-chat long enough...) I am very happy with this so far, and especially as the Walmart car ramps and cheep jacks worked out just fine.. I really got to know my car spending some good time under it with a whopping 1' of clearance (like when i dropped the AC compressor on my face, lol :| ) While at It there are a few things I noticed and looked over. The clutch of course is of interest .. So how does the wear on this look? This is an 07 with just over 10K on it, around 2.5K of which was put on by me since I got the car early this year. Any input, or opinion is welcome .... thanks ! Wojtek Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I think most will tell you that it's pretty near impossible to judge clutch wear edge on like that. Looking at the clutch face and seeing how close the surface is to the rivets might be more indicative, but even then, we're talking millimeters. And besides, once you have gone to all the trouble and labor to get the clutch out to look at the surface, it only makes sense to put a new one in while you're there. However, I will say that the Scud wheels look great on your car!
I appreciate that input Rosso328 , I figured I'd ask if this was something that could be judged from a visual like this, being curious while under the car atb,
I have a Maserati Spyder which has a similar clutch to the 430. Clutches have groves in their faces that look like a "D" when looked at from the edge. When you can't see the D's the clutch is worn out. I think your picture may show that but you need to blow it up. The groves are about 1 to 1 1/2 mm deep on a new clutch but no one on the Mazer sites has ever been able to tell me the exact depth. Here's a better picture and you can see the D's on the disc edges. As above - I can get a good idea of wear from a visual inspection. I can post an example of 100% next week if you need it.
Clutch really needs to come out and be inspected and measured against a new one. When my 360 gearbox was off the clutch came out and I measured it at only .005" thinner than new. Back in it went.
Great info. Thanks guys. SO i do believe i can see the grooves in the photos i took, but i see how there is no sure way to tell exactly what the state of the clutch is from the side. I will need my annual service done for the year as the season for driving is coming to a close coon in the NorthEast, so I will have the clutch snap checked at that time too. Here is a zoomed in picture i had saved .. Image Unavailable, Please Login
That's in the reigon of 50%. I would not be worried about it for next season - just keep checking each annual. I'll state the obvious that of course a visual check is not an exact science, but with a bit of experience you can gauge the wear of a clutch with reasonable accuracy.
Hey andrie, thanks for posting all the pics. I saw in the workshop manual that the oem clutch thickness is 5.95mm +/- 0.2mm Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
