I am close to pulling trigger on 16M, wondering about advice...
    I have an F12 and a Speciale.
Anything I need to particularly know or be concerned about with a 16M?
Anything I should specifically ask or investigate?
Clutch life...I heard 10K miles, is that true?
Drove it today...WOW! What a machine....
    Thanks.

They are solid cars mechanically. Common cosmetic issues are hazy headlights and discolored carbon engine bay panels. Clutch life really depends on how the car was driven. I've seen some cars with 10-15k miles that still have over 70% on the original clutch.

The 16m is a unique and special car. Add a s-line exhaust and it will be the best sounding car in your collection. Good luck and post some pics once you pull the trigger!

Properly driven car should get alot more than 10K miles. PPI will tell you the clutch life. Alternatively, if the car is offered at an official dealer they should be able to tell you.

If the car you are looking at has a highly worn clutch and less than 10K I would argue it has been driven hard or incorrectly and seller is telling a story.

    Thanks guys.
It is at my local dealer whom I have great relationship with.
Getting the "official" written clutch readout, they gave me a verbal of ~75% remaining, and the car has just over 6K miles.
The headlight cover is mildly hazy as you note.
The car sounds wonderful, and thrilling to drive.
I am now so used to the DCT that the slow shift at partial throttle seems "old school" but at heavy throttle high rpm shifts it is fantastic!
Feels like a car form a "previous era" at Ferrari...raw, visceral, unhinged...makes my Speciale seem comfortable, and makes the F12 seem likes a Bentley. :)
My gauge is my wife is very happy driving in the F12...and would absolutely hate the 16M...therefore the 16M is a must!

You'll love it, there's really nothing else out there quite like the scuderia, and probably never will be. Just seems like something has been lost in the newer cars. Every time I take my scud for a spin, I can't help but to think, this is what a Ferrari is supposed to feel like!

Go for it, the three cars go very well together so you'll have a perfect fleet, I'm already jealous!

The 16M/Scud is usually very reliable, but as always with such high-performance cars, you have to treat him well.

75% remaining clutch seems to be credible. I have now driven more than 20 thousand kilometers with the same clutch, including race track visits. Waiver to start with the launch control and maneuver carefully pays off.

    Good luck!

I was worried what my wife might think about the 16M until she drove it. We have a 430 spider, she has a California, and she spent the weekend driving the 16 M. A couple of days later we were on a Sunday afternoon drive. I was driving a 2013 McLaren MP4-12C Spider and she was driving the California when she called me and said..."don't get me wrong, driving the Cali doesn't suck, but the 16M...the sound of the engine and those downshifts! The 16M is my favorite car"! I knew right then I had lost the 16M to my wife.

I have a 16M and can't imagine ever selling the car. It's just that good. My car had hazy, spiderweb headlamps covers too which I had replaced under warranty, the issue has not returned.

I bought the car with 575 miles on it and now have 6K-ish miles and it's been a pleasure to own and drive.

If you get one, bring it to a track as the car's "other" personality comes out big time and it's something you won't soon forget.

Congrats! The natural question is how does it compare to the Speciale? They are 2 outstanding cars and it would be great to hear your opinion on the driving experience of each.

I've put about 500 miles on the car in the last couple weeks or so...some thoughts:
Wow! The sound is raw, the shifts at high rpm and aggressive throttle position are like shooting a shotgun.
The steering is slower that the Speciale, a little more "vague." I don't "feel the road" with the same granularity as I do in the Speciale.
I absolutely love the look out the windshield...the two beautiful front wings just curve away from you and you feel like your are almost sitting right on the front wheels, whereas in the Speciale you sit back more and look more straight forward out to a further front wing. The 16M makes you feel a little more like you are "engaged" in the driving position as a result of this closeness (difficult for me to explain)...more "go-kartish."
16M has more mechanical sounds since the top is down and engine is right there with no intervening glass, more chains, gears, pulley sounds, more visceral.
I absolutely adore the "old school" dash (one of my favorite things about it)...I didn't realize how much I must have missed the simple gauges with driving the Speciale and F12 (with TFT displays)...but I must have because the old gauges really really resonate with me.
Maybe it is jut that the 16M is the "new toy" but when going out to the garage I am more eager to drive the 16M right now than the Speciale.
Now, in fairness to my beloved Speciale...it is "better," faster, more competent. I know looks are subjective but to me my RC Speciale with NART stripe is more beautiful...an inspired design. I love the look of the 16M from front to just behind roll bar, but the there is something about the lower back of the car that disappoints slightly...lower panels seem boxy, not flowing.
My F12, which I brought to Finali Mondiali, now is the "grown up's Ferrari." Love the F12, but it doesn't seem as "alive" as these other two. It is the "sensible" choice for longer drives, take wife to dinner, etc.

How to sum it up? It's complicated.
If you told me I had to keep only one of the three...it would be the Speciale..because it does everything so well: beauty, excitement, speed, modern convenience and reliability...literally a car you can use every day yet have an electrifying drive through a mountain pass and push to the limits on the track...almost flawless in design and execution.
But...I work very hard all week and this Saturday morning..weather permitting...I am looking forward to grabbing the keys to the 16M and going for a drive to meet up with my friend in his Aperta. Speciale will spend yet another weekend in the garage.

Might post pix of the three someday, but that would mean subscribing...and too lazy to go to the trouble. (Plus...you all know what these cars look like.) :)

    Cheers!

Glad you're enjoying it! There's just something about the scud that gets the heart rate going :)

As for the steering, have your dealer check for play in the steering column. I believe its an easy adjustment. There was a thread about this awhile back

Thanks! After reading that thread I think I have this problem too...car seems to wander and needs steering input correction a lot, though it is subtle.

The steering ratio on the 458 is very low compared to the Scud but if the car is wandering something is up.

Thanks for the great write up and comparison. You know you have some fantastic cars when the F12 is the least engaging one of the bunch! I also have to agree with you about the analog gauges. There is just something right about real gauges vs these new all digital computer screens. The gauges in a Ferrari shouldn't try to emulate our cell phones!

One last question for you, transmission seems to be one of the most polarizing differences with these 2 cars. Which are you enjoying more, the F1 in the 16m or the DCT in the Speciale?

It seems most of the Scud/16m guys swear by the more raw F1 shift with the kick to the back, and most of the 458 and newer Ferrari guys swear by the smooth, fast shift of the DCT. Considering you own both and don't have a bias, which are you liking best?

Have the alignment checked as well. I don't notice any wandering on my scud.
