I'm having a hell of a time removing the the oil mesh filter stop ring. The manual says to use a screwdriver prying it out. I can't grip it enough to pry it. It keeps turning on its seat. Any suggestions? [IMG]

I haven't encountered this, but maybe try an awl (pointy screwdriver) with care or 2 screwdrivers?

If you're replacing it....just use a needle nose pliers and yank it out.

I was thinking of doing it but wouldn't the stop ring impede adding the new mesh filter? What a design!

I tried that also. Extremely tricky. Not much room for two hands/screwdrivers.

My guess is no. Just use a dental pick to get it out. Press the pick between the ring and outer margin of the retaining recess to pry the ring inward out of the groove. At that point, you should be able to lift the ring out of the recess as it will naturally compress as you pull outward. If you have a Dentist friend he will have that ring out in seconds. I am a Dentist(Orthodontist) and would love to have problems this simple all day every day!

I use a dental pick, (also available from harbour freight tools etc.) or as mentioned before, from your friendly neighbourhood dentist/orthodontist :)
I would suspect the actual dental pics would a lot stronger and more durable than the HF stuff!

If it looks clean there is no need to replace it. Having said that.. ... from that picture, I think you need to.

Thanks for the helpful comments. I picked up a pick and hook set and will give it another go later.
What is the ideal sealant to use on the drain flange plate? I noticed there was a white coloured sealant the dealer used when I removed it.

Any hi-temp RTV silicon gasket goo is good. Mine has an orange one which I think could be Wurth or Permatex or Loctite or similar.

Try hondabond or yamabond. Both are great.

Success! The seeger ring was removed using a 'sturdy' hook pick tool. The rest of the oil change was straightforward. Thanks to everyone with the valuable suggestions.
The old mesh filter had some particles trapped in it suggesting that it may not have been changed in a while. Has anyone captured any debris such as this?

Strange to find the metal particles but it seems the mesh has never been changed. I guess it's common to leave it in there? If so, it'd be normal to find some debris like this. It only has 8K and runs perfect. Dyno run from the other day shows how healthy it is:

Dyno proves everything is okay. Stop thinking about it or you will worry yourself to death! If things didn't come out of the engine the screen would have never been developed. You are good to go!
