The other day when I was driving in a hilly area I noticed that sometimes when I hit the throttle there would be a spraying noise. Similar maybe to one of those computer duster cans being sprayed... does that help you hear the sound?

One thing I noticed was if I was constant on the throttle and light, there was no noise. But in different bouts of having to throttle a little more on a hill I would hear the spray sound... and it would go on and off as I applied/released pressure. Any ideas?

I'm pretty sure that you are describing the sound of air being gulped into the engine. The intake is the scoop right behind the drivers head. When you give it throttle abruptly, the throttle plates open up to allow air in. What you are hearing is the rush of the air. It's part of the "music"!

Yes. Thanks to the resonance chambers.

I was wondering if that was it. I've only had the car for about a month now. I figured I would have heard it before.

In hindsight the girls window was closed because of her "hair" so I know we weren't hearing it on that side, that could be why.

So literally the the air intake opens and closes based on throttle? I didn't realize it self monitored, guess I thought it would be open at all times.

    A simplified explaination:
The engine is a big air pump. The more air it moves, the more power output. When you press the accelerator, the plates on the intake open up to allow more air in (they are just flaps that open and close). When there is more air, you will also need more fuel to keep the ratio of air and gas proper. More air + more fuel = more power! and more noise output (music).
If you open your mouth and breathe in sharply, that is the same noise the car makes. It's just that the car has much bigger lungs and the "windpipe" is tuned for a nice sound!
