I know not very helpful either but I couldnt resist. I think you meant to ask, "Is there one thread out there that explains it best that one of you have used?" again, I am no help but I look forward to learning from your adventure!
I've been knocking around this site for a few years now and I've yet to come across a thread that you could literally print off and follow. My belts are long overdue replacement. I'd do it myself but I've decided to go a little deeper and replace some other components which will require strip-down to a level which is beyond my capability. If you do this job yourself, please do us all a favour and document & photograph the process.
Remi- Do you have a 360 workshop manual? If not, one can be downloaded for free from ferraridatabase.com. Are you doing a lock and swap, or are you degreeing the cams? Makes a big difference. For the latter, some pros pull the engine.
I'm doing it right now. I'll take some pictures but won't be done till probably the end of the week. I'll try to document everything. I, like you, was unable to find a decent guide. I'll try to get a good post together next week
IIRC... Take the seats out for maximum enjoyment of the task before you yes? Good chance to clean the interior IMO
The cams were timed at the last change. I take it they will still be inside ECU's capabilty of adjustment. I do have the WSM, thanks.
Yeah, Ive been here far longer than anyone replying in this thread so far, and I have yet to see a write-up. I do all the work myself, on both my Ferraris, Porsches and Lambo, but I have to admit Im very lazy to do writeups..... I should have someone with me to photo and document.
I believe RayJohn did a write up years ago. One of the big questions is do you have a sonic belt tension meter? You can't do this job correctly without one. My, admittedly rudimentary, understanding is that the tensioner bearing is the weak link. If the belt is set too tight you can get a bearing failure and if the belt is too loose ... Another problem with too much tension is undue force on the variators and possible breakage. All of these have pretty dramatic consequences.
A link to the sonic tester, and other relevant links, are in the procedure that I wrote. Would you like a copy? I used the tester to do my belts; very easy to use.
The WSM references the tension meter and it has been discussed in many threads here on Fchat. Image Unavailable, Please Login
One of the weak links; there are several. However, some pros who don't use a sonic tester; they don't measure the tension (in the timing belts) at all.
Best deal on a frequency tensiometer and has been used by several Ferrari owners with good results. Pays for itself pretty quickly and also used for auxiliary belts, which even the F430 has. MotoReva - Ducati Tools and Supplies
Thanks for the info! While on this subject, my local indy shop tells me on the right bank, there is a tensioner "bracket" that requires updating as well. How many people have done this?
