Thanks y'all for the advice, it landed me in the fed penitentiary with an additional $2500 fine!

Ok so I bought a 2002 360 with eurocustoms cat bypass pipes, pre cats and stock muffler and tailpipes remain. CEL P0430 on and I knew this before purchase.

So in Massachusetts I have 4 options

1- Put cats back in ($3000- parts)

    2- have ECU's flashed ($1500-2000)

3- drive my f car with a rejected inspection sticker -(no $ but kinda ghetto)

    4- try extenders/mini cats.

After reading as many of the posts here and elsewhere I opted for #4. The fabspeed extenders were $150 and instead I opted for what I feel is a better product.

Nicely made and modular so easier to install. Plus pair cost me $35. I left off the straight segment.

Then I put a pair of big daddies mini cats into the 90 degree extender instead of the straight segment, and put the O2 sensors in.

O2 Simulator Mini Cat Cel Fix best oxygen sensor simulator made.

The good news: driven 100+ miles and no CEL, and passed state inspection. Prior to the new set up CEL would come on at 50 miles.

-- total Cost $135, and 1 hour of my time.

Bad news: this fed EPA agent was waiting for me when I got home from the inspection station. Well...hopefully the battery won't be dead when I get out.

Big Drama for nothing.... 3K for a pair of Cats? These float around for next to nothing. 1hr job to install.

Thanks for response. I know from your prior posts you know how to turn a wrench. ... No drama just levity...

3k was for either sports cats e.g. http://bit.ly/1fbpK1C
or used OEC cats off ebay if u can find them. I would not install a used aftermarket cat. ( just me). I don't see either of these options levitating for much less than 3k.

Btw i guess my basic point was missed. I've seen some folks post about CEL's after installing bypass pipes and even some aftermarket sports cats. there is some controversy over how to beat the post cat CEL p0430. I have seen some positive and lots of negative posts on both O2 extenders and big daddies mini cats. This is just another (albeit still early miles) positive post for an inexpensive not entirely inelegant fix.

Cigarettes are in the mail. Diamond file is in your Easter basket, inside the chocolate bunny.
I'll be interested to see how the setup holds up after several hundred miles. Keep us posted.

I found that if I put in poor quality gas (Canada's version of Exxon), I'd not get CELs, could pass E_test, but the engine knocked like crazy under acceleration.

Soon as I filled tank with Shell V-Power, CELs came back in same frequency, but knocking stopped.

I've been thinking of trying the same set up as you have.

Im running Tubi De-cat pipes, the original (euro) headers with no precat, and tubi Stage 2 rear box. (Very LOUD) I use ''extenders'' for the rear O2 sensors, and I have never had a CEL.

Every year I must put back my cats when I get the obligatory Tech inspection for my car. The job takes like an hour and is all done with the rear bumper and under tray on the car.
-A good tip here is when doing the initial installation, position the flange of the Cat / de-cat pipe in such a way that the upper bolt can be easily accessed from above, and the lower bolt can be easily accessed from the access in the wheel wells.

There are lots of used OE cats on the market. Very cheap.

Do you need the OEM cats for visual inspection, or would an aftermarket cat also pass?

No visual inspection for us. They check the actual gasses coming out of the tailpipe, so any cat which does the job is fine.

I feel your pain. Was like that in mass, until a few years ago they ditched the actual emissions testing for an obd check. Now Life is good :)

Catalyst efficiency code... I think an extender & or mini cat may help. I went with both because of low cost and just wanted what I thought was the best chance of success at outset.

As far as why you are getting the code with better gas... I will defer to one of our more esteemed mechanical brothers as my thoughts would be conjecture and may lead you on a goose-chase (Canadian goose of course).
