    Hi all,
Can you tell from a VIN# when the car was made? Not the year but if it was an early production or late production car for that year?
    Thanks!

Give us the VIN and we can look it up in Matthias Urban's book to get a rough idea.

Not my car so I don't feel comfortable posting it, I just thought there was a way to decode it.......it's a '01 360 Spider and I know that in the later '01's they started with the access panel for the fuel pumps, so I wanted to see if this was a later or earlier one.......

You can always buy Matthias Urban's book. You can look up at what Assembly Number or serial number the access covers were added to the Spider in Ricambi's online parts catalogs.

Looked and could not really tell for sure. Probably around Assembly Number 41464, when the capote top housing changed. Since I know you are going to ask, that is around serial number 1246xx.

What possible reason could you have for wanting to keep the last 6 of the VIN (serial number) secret, even if it is not your Ferrari? Nobody can do anything with it, especially since your profile and info has nothing in it.

I can identify a lot of details from VIN, but not month of production.

But, here is one little trick :) For 360 Spyder first serial number was 118155, and last 140517. Maybe this can help.

I know what are you looking for ;)

AFAK access panels were added on late 2001 Spyder models.

I assume nearest dealer could get that info very quickly for you. But lets wait a bit, maybe someone will chime in with proper info regarding your question.

Thought I answered that up above. Did you read it? 125685 would have been built in Sep/Oct 01. The first 02 MY I see is 125716. Why not just look and see if the access panels are there?

That would make sense if the car wasn't 3000 miles away, lol!

Why do you care about a car that is 3000 miles away? Going to buy her? If so, have the owner or dealer take photos of the area.

Yeah, I might, and sometimes you can't get a hold of the person advertising the car right away, so, in the meanwhile, I would like to educate myself on what # Spider was the first in '01 to have the access panel for the fuel pumps. This is actually the second '01 Spider since the first post, that I am looking at.

125685 was likely built in August or September of 2001. If the car is for sale, you can request from the seller to send you a picture of the car's data plate, which is located on the driver's side door jamb (the hinge side, not the side where the door closes to meet the body). In order to properly photograph the door jamb data plate (on a 360 or an F430), the driver's side door needs to be open as wide as it'll go.

If the seller sends you this picture, please post it as I would like to document 125685's actual month and year date of production in my database. Thank you.

You have the best information we know, including when the change was likely made by AN and SN. For more info, you need to go to a higher power or learn how to read a parts catalog.

Carbon- That would do him no good, since the title of the post is misleading.

Thanks Mr Phillips, for all your help, your concern about why I'm worried about a car 3000 miles away, if I'm going to buy her and my ability to read a parts catalog, you really make me feel welcomed here. Why the negativity?

As both books and records are not 100% accurate either way the ONLY way to know if an earlier car has the access ports is to have a picture taken of the area. It's not a crazy request, if they refuse move on or start looking at later model spiders....

Negativity is because you ask questions and then ignore the answers.

Yup, that's it, this is what I got from him so far:
"Looked and could not really tell for sure. Probably around Assembly Number 41464"

And to that solid answer I got:
"Thought I answered that up above. Did you read it?"

    Followed by:
"Why do you care about a car that is 3000 miles away?"
"For more info, you need to go to a higher power or learn how to read a parts catalog.
Carbon- That would do him no good, since the title of the post is misleading. "
"Negativity is because you ask questions and then ignore the answers. "

So, Gary, your right, not what I wanted to hear. I thought it would be smart, respectful, (as I was), knowledgeable and dignified, but it wasn't, but I was also told by people here, "that's just how he is"....thanks again for all your "help".
