I've always have seen Group 34 mentioned with dimensions of:

    10 1/4" Length X 6 3/4" Width X 8" High (incl. Posts @ 3/4"), I think that's about the largest you'll be able to squeeze in there.

That's the size that I have in my 400i. It is a NAPA Legend 75 Part # 7534.

    CA @ 32 deg F is 875 amps, CCA at 0 deg. F is 700 amps.

    Current price is $109

i'm using an Optima marine (blue top) group 34. It's been excellent considering the low usage... but that's the whole idea behind a marine battery. ;) plus there is no acid spills/leaks to worry about with the Optima.

I've always heard in the marine world that automotive batteries are used for the engine & marine batteries are used for house electrics. My understanding is that auto batteries are meant to be kept fully charged (via alternator) & marine batteries are meant to be cycled (drained, then charged).

After 9 years of ownership and who knows how long it was in there before I purchased the 400, my Interstate Battery has finally failed and it is time to replace it.

Reading up on batteries on FerrariChat I found a couple references to the Odyssey AGM dry cells. This particular battery looks like it fits the group 34 specification and has 880CCA: http://www.odysseybatteries.com/battery/pc1500.htm

The Group 34 Interstate MTP-91 is about 1/2 the list price:

    http://www.interstatebatteries.com/cs_eStore/Content.aspx?dsNav=Ntk~SearchGroup|batteries+automotive+mtp+91|3|,Arpp~12,A~Part+Number,N~21-2147384906

I am wondering if anybody has experience to share with that Odyssey in a 400?
I helped a friend install and Optima in a 348 and he was happy with it for quite a while.

    http://www.optimabatteries.com/us/en/shop/redtop/optima-batteries-8002-002-34-redtop-starting-battery/

They appear to be a bit more than the Interstate.

I am leaning toward a sealed solution as less acid sloshing about seams like a wise plan now that it is available.

Marine batteries normally sit on board a boat or yacht, for sometimes long periods of time, before they are ask to crank the engine, usually Diesel. My limited experience is that they don't mind cranking at low voltage, were as a conventional battery generally is considered dead somewhere between 10.5 - 11.7 V ...

Time catch up on projects. Replaced the 400i battery today. The Interstate Battery shop around the corner had the MTP 24F's replacement in stock and it is now installed. Fits perfectly!

Yes Bruce...you a perfectly correct...... not even room left for an RCH. By the way.. the very last thing that you want to intentionally do, is try starting our cars on that low 10 volts, which is practically non- existent . Bad things happen. (I learned this first-hand). That is why marine batteries are specifically not intended for cars use. I am all ears as to learning of a smaller bat. size with the cranking power of the 34/78 group. Thank you. Jq.
