i went to see an '84 400i today, grey over red leather, 5 spd. You can see the car car here on my site Cheapest V12 Ferrari you can buy. I was hoping it would not have any current needs, but it does. The a/c is not working, the windows do not go down, the front bumper needs a repaint, there is an oil leak, very small, from what looks like the oil cooler lines. Also has a small coolant leak. The drips are right beside the oil drops. So it looks like it's comming from the same area. It has TRX tires with lots of tread, but they felt very hard. The paint has some cracks where the a pillars meet the roof. The hood, drivers side door, and fender have been repainted. The good, no rust, and interior is very good. In the last 15,000 miles it has had; - the rear shocks rebuilt - heads rebuilt - fuel injection system rebuilt - new clutch - shift linkage rebuilt Will not budge from 32k, i wont budge from 30k. i kinda think even 30k might be too high. yes, no, find another car? thanks
With only your description to go on I'd say your offer is more than fair. The seller claims "new" tires, check the date codes, I suspect the seller is hoping deep tread can pass as new. I'm sure you know replacements are a bit over $2k. I don't see a line forming to buy it so suspect if you make your offer a take it or leave it the seller will fold. He'd be a fool not to. These cars don't sell quickly, his $30k can make him lots more if invested in different inventory. Good luck, nice color combo.
You didn't happen to catch the serial number did you? Is the documentation as complete as he says? Are the TRX tires really "fresh", as in recently made, not deep tread?
Thanks Ross, the color combo was really nice. The new tires where a used set with lots of tread left. Ashman- unfortunately I did not take a pic of the serial number. The documentation was good, receipts for everything he claimed. The car came from California 3 years ago. Fortunately or unfortunately the car sold this afternoon. Oh well I'll find another A little bit sad but also glad. You know when you see a car and something just says don't do it, I got the feeling with this one
Like I always say, if you didn't get it it's because it was not for you! Life will find something better for you!
Good day Rob, This car was discussed on here before. Since you did not get the chassis number you will need to do some searching if you are still curious as to what was posted. I seem to remember it sold for $19K or so out of Los Angeles and there were comments about transmission issues. Later the new owner posted that all was fine, etc. Cheers, Sam Edit: Chassis number appears to be: 50679 Here is the thread on the car: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/365-gt4-2-2-400-412/208371-400i-series-2-5-speed-ebay-s-n-50679-a-7.html
If the seller got his $32,000 for this car more power to him. I think Rob, the OP, should be glad he gets to keep his $30K and resume the hunt.
thanks Sam That is the car. I think it just had to many, "probably" fixes. As in, the windows don't go down, probably just a switch. The oil leak, probably just a hose, or crush washer. On the other hand i could be completley wrong and just passed on a good car haha, unless the new owner posts up I won't know.
Good day Rob, You are most welcome! Indeed, it does not reflect well on the seller/car when some of the basics... like windows, etc ... are not working. Stuff does and will happen unexpectedly, but usually one would expect items like this would be addressed prior to selling. Oil leaks, etc... well... as we all know F cars tend to like to "mark their territory" and so if it is an odd drip then that is almost to be expected. However anything more would also be an indicator. The only way to know for certain would have been a PPI. Cheers, Sam
1977 with no motor. I will post photos. man did a lot of work to prep car for a chevy motor. has three large boxes of new parts
Just to set the record straight; the transmission of this car was completely pulled apart and rebuilt less than 10,000 miles ago, and at the same time a new clutch disk, and new pressure plate were installed and the flywheel was surfaced. The shifting problem was determined to be slop and issues in the shifting mechanism which was completely fixed with new parts. All fully documented in a complete history file going back to the earliest service work on the car. I can only assume that all of the talk about transmission issues was due to some comments which were made before the transmission was rebuilt, and then propagated since then by people who don't know...
So, does this mean you got $32K or you are justifying why its worth $32K? Regards, Art S. PS. I put a stupid amount of money into my 330 knowing I wasn't getting it back, much as 400 owners that bought cars with needs are doing today. In my case, 330s became more desirable so I'll get my money back if I sell before the market tanks. Hopefully, 400s will become the 'flavor of the month' in the future.
unfortunately, that's what happens...and it's a shame... but is the car still for sale ? hey Art, I hope all is well...will the 330 ready for the road this season ?
Brett, I don't know. Since I've been learning how to walk again I haven't been focused on it. Hopefully, both it and I will be. Regards, Art S.
Art? what happened to your walking ability. just tell me it's none of your business. I will not b offended. two you young blacks attacked me in 91 and until July 13, 2013 could not walk without pain. in Dec. 2002 a disc ruptured and I had emergency surgery by a butcher that made it worse. the Central Baptist Hospital here almost killed me twice. my sister(Dr.)drove me in her car to Vandy because there was no time for any emergency transport. they gave me units. I only had three pints of blood left! after that I was 6mo. in recovery, three in rehab. but still had a back pain that was awful. last July 13, 2013 it got so bad (Sunday) that I went to the Starbucks where I have coffee with the head of U.K. hospital every morning and ask for help. Tuesday I had an operation and after four hours of surgery and 6 of rest they made me get out of bed and walk. I thought I was going to die right there. Walked ten feet and realized there was no more pain! I can walk as good as a child!
Mitchell, You are doing better than me. Here is the short version. In 1986 I broke my neck (C1 through C6 were either broken or dislocated) and I was paralyzed from the neck down. I had the worst broken neck that lived at the time. Through a series of fortuitous events, I mostly recovered after two years. I was able to row varsity crew in college (although only on port). Over the past several years I had been slowly going down hill. Last June I got a septic staph infection (in the hospital, stabilized in a week with one minor surgery) and simultaneously started deteriorating rapidly. It was determined that arthritic bony growths were pinching off my spinal canal and causing a syrinx (fluid filled blister in the center of the spinal cord). I selected a specialist and had the back of my neck removed and the spinal cord fiddled with. Things seemed great for two days, then something bled out and the resulting hematoma pressed on the spinal cord. Rather than going back in immediately, the doctors took a 'wait and see approach'. As a result, I lost the use of my hands and feet before they operated. I spent last summer in the hospital and have been slowly learning to walk again. This time around it's kind of a pain because I'm older, it's going slower and I have a company to run and other responsibilities. The funny thing is: the day that my hard collar came off, which meant I was allowed to drive, I drove a stick shift just fine! Well, some of my clutch leg muscles got tired... So if you come to NJ, stay off the roads, there are some crazy cripples driving around here It's a headache and a distraction, especially on the days my body doesn't cooperate, but I'm plowing ahead. As I'm not improving to my satisfaction neurologically, I may have a further surgery in the future, but as I'm still improving, so I'm in no hurry. Frankly, I felt more handicapped when my computer went down than I do from this - I guess I'm just used to it. Regards, Art S. PS. I've been following your battle in Rossa, how's it going?
to add to the tales of woe, seven years ago I went in for the second of two back surgeries...39 days later, thanks to a major post-surgical infection, I was brought home in a wheel chair....the week before the surgery I had raced my Alfa Sprint in a VSCCA race at Lime Rock. Now I was told the I was unlikely to ever walk again. Being the stubborn cuss that I am told I am I now walk with a cane and my wife and I are looking forward to running the Great Race from Maine to Florida in June...unfortunately not in a F-car...both of ours are too recent...must be before 1972...don't let anyone tell you that you can't! Marc
Cool! This has now become the hidden cripples thread Marc, glad to hear it didn't keep you down. Sorry to the OP for taking this thread slightly off topic... Regards to all, Art S.
