I noticed that my pop up lights does have two different brands for the glass lenses used (both sides): Carello (high beam) and Hella (low beam). I would expect both should be Carello. Maybe in the past they have been damaged somehow and replaced by Hella. Or perhaps it's Original. I have a 400 carb (1979). If any of you can check theirs and let me know your results that would be much appreciated. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I had a mish-mash of hella, carello and sylvania $5 lights. Forget about whatever was original. If you drive at night contact Daniel Stern Lighting and get these parts Hella BiFocal H1 low beams ($129/ea) 5.75" parabolic H1 high beams ($79/ea white light) Narva Rangepower+50 H1 bulbs all around ($15.59/ea) relay kit RIK-CSR ($59)
Thank you Roger. Interesting to see two different brands used as well. For the 400i it makes sense since the foglights used are also provided by Cibie. Anymore confirmation by others is welcomed.
Today I received an update from a 400 1977 owner, this one has 2 Hella's fitted for lo and hi beam. Anyone else can do some checking for me please? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Is it true that these are sealed units and blown bulbs cannot be changed? Was this a part used on a fiat or alfa that doesn't attract the ferrari tax??
On a June 1978 400 Auto chassis 24541, French market (yellow head lights), the lenses are as follows: Low beam is Hella 14466 R7 High beam is Carello 03 245 700 Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Bulbs (H1) can be changed on these projectors, the procedure is shown on page 109 of the instruction book 142/77. I did not change the bulbs on a 400, but I did on a 365 GT4 BB which has identical projectors. I assume these Carello projectors were used on other Italian cars than Ferrari. I am pretty sure these Hella projectors were used on German cars. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Good day All, Looking at the Owner's manual's on the 365 Gt4 2+2 and the 400GT and observing the pictures of the headlights (pictures look the same... and so perhaps Ferrri reused the picture from the 365 manual in the 400?)... Anyway, it would appear that the lights used in the manuals were made by Carello. I say this, as the glass "rib" patterns correlate to those on Carello lights. Hella's are close, but are not the same... and Cibie's have a distinct curved pattern in the Centre area... If I am correct and that the Owner's Manuals used Carellos, that does not imply that all cars were shipped with Carellos... In fact some locations may have had specific regulations for particular headlamps and/or beam pattern and/or beam intensity. Thank you Rovexienus. I suspect this is the correct combo for the 400. And Carello & Cibie for the 400i. Interesting observation Sam. Perhaps a few others can check theirs and let us know the results. Maybe the 365GT4 2+2 was equipped with two Carello's.
My 1985 400i has 4 Hellas...H4's on the outside beams. All appear original with original bugs still splattered on them. So if I want to keep it all original as possible.......do I leave the bugs ? Kidding........no really......I am kidding ! Gary
I have a mixture as well. 1980 400i has 4 x Carello 1980 400i has 2 x Carello & 2 x Hella 1982 400i has a real mix of Carello, Wagner & Koito. Cheers Al Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Good day Erwin, On my 365, both of my lights are Carello (exactly the same as shown in the Owner's manual)... and look to be original too! Cheers, Sam
