The centre dash in my 82 400i, is covered in blue leather, which matches the rest of the car's interior. Is anyone able to tell me if this is standard or if it would originally been wooden?

It does look good, but makes working out what the various switches and dials do tricky.

    Hello Herb
How are you? The centre dash should be timber. Never seen one in leather.
    Kindest regards,
    Jim

Thanks. I have seen the exact same colour and leather combination on another car quite recently (cannot remember where though), and it does look of an 'original' quality?

If it is meant to be timber, and it has been covered, you'd imagine that the wood is still there and under the leather..?

    Hello Herb
You would imagine that it is still underneath. You should be able the tell by the panel fiy and the tightness of the switchgear.
I was an upholsterer by trade and never seen one like that.
I would carefully pull it out and investigate.
    Regards,
    Jim

I have also seen this done a few times, here's a photo of 26743 which has a similar leather covered centre console. Whilst probably not original, it is not unattractive to my eyes.

In fact to my eyes it looks a lot better. I also like the silver that came on the GTC/4.

leather over center console panel is only in series 2 400's and 412 originaly correct. 365 and series 400's had wood instead. GTC4 siblings had aluminum.

I agree, I always liked the wood but I think this looks better, especially with the lighter colored seats.

You guys need to be careful here...you're giving bad information.
A Series 1 car would have a wood center console but a Series 2 car would have a leather covered center console from the factory.

Don't think it is bad information - herbherb has a series 1. We are pointing out the leather covering is not original, but that there are other series 1 400is and carb 400s that have leather consoles, added after the cars left the factory, and that they look attractive.

My car has the wood console, covered fogs with the long grill and TRX tires (sticker on the windshield agrees) but you said mine is a series 2 car. I thought mine was a series 1, just trying to figure this out. Maybe mines a 1.5! Like an e-type! :)

Uh, um, well, to be honest I don't remember saying your car was a Series 2 car. Did I really? Was I drinking?

Don't laugh, we know of a dozen or so cars that have some features from both series. Very interesting cars. #39155, #36147, and #34985 are a few examples.

Sorry, didn't want to be rude... Just a little joke.
Mine is 38023, first sold on May 82.
Don't know why things are not matching. For example, as I checked the body last week with my body-mechanic we didn't find any evidence of accident or work on the front of the car, which could have explained the short grill...
Wish I could contact the first owner or workshop to learn more about it.

Oh no you weren't rude at all. We all understand. These are funny cars. Just when you think you have them figured out you find one that breaks the rules.

    Shortly:

    365 & 400 series 1 > wood
    400 series 2 & 412 > leather

Not specifically I guess! In your representing thread you said series 1 cars had 15" wheels and series 2 TRX. Mine has TRX wheels. Not sure if you were drinking but I was at the time! :)

Could someone please post a photo of the differences between the grille types so I can see and understand.

My '78 had 4 trx wheels although the spare was a 15. Remember that some PO's were super-wealthy and may have upgraded to the new trx when they became available.

Series 1 has the fog lights behind the grill and inboard more which reminds me of a carb'd BB and the series 2 has a short grill with smaller fog lights moved outboard and forward like a BBi.

Yes I saw that. I assume body colour not black regardless of car colour?

I noted a small chrome strip that outlines the lower grill opening on the series 2 car but cant see if the series 1 has one as well. I dont have one on my series 1, should I?
