    Was separate air-con in the rear of a series 1 400i auto an optional extra, or standard fit? If it was an option, was it often specified or actually quite rare?

    It was an optional extra. It was quite often specified, but most cars didn't have it. A guess is that about a quarter of 400is of your vintage had rear air con.

    It was an option until it became standard on the 412. Usually referred to as "dual a/c", I don't know how many have it.
