When I purchased my car she was wearing a "400 automatic" badge. Of course I did not notice it was not the correct one... But after checking several times under the hood, I could not find a single carb there. She is definitely an injected one! Will probably never know what happened but I found the appropriate badge so I don't need this one anymore... If anybody needs it, just ask. Looks nearly like new, would say 9,5/10 as you can see below Image Unavailable, Please Login
That was the standard badge when the car was equipped with an automatic transmission, regardless of whether it was carb'd. or injected. I'm assuming you have an auto. box...in which case, you'd want to retain it unless you're going the de-badging route.
I've only seen 2 of them online on advertised cars. One black -77 400GT in Germany adverted on Mobile.de at the time I bought mine, and the latest Rosso Rubino one in UK. I emailed the shop with the red one and they said it looked totally original and of metal.
Perhaps I am wrong and some of them were fitted with a 400GT badge when new. I say some of them - I have looked through my photos and can only find 3 400GTs with a badge, out of approx. 30 I have photos of, but very few autos are missing the badge. The earliest relevant photo I can find is from c.1981, #24741, when it was 3 years old (and the Mondial 8 had just been introduced). Image Unavailable, Please Login
Well... I wasn't expecting such a debate around that small metal part! Mistake from the factory? Were they out of stock at that time? Style choice of a previous owner? Replacement after a theft? Mystery like my S2 front grill... But everybody agrees that the correct badge for a 82 automatic 400 injected is the one I've put on. So let's say I'll do as Erwin did and keep the carb's one as a trophy till I learn one day it came out like that from the factory! By the way, all of the badges are available, new, from Eurospares for a few pounds. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I share your observations David. The 400GT Carbs rarely had the badge fitted. And equally it's rare that 400 Automatics are missing the badge. Interesting to see they are listed at Eurospares, even the strange Arabic version. Except the 400GT is not listed ... Image Unavailable, Please Login
