I'm out driving my car and realized I'm more than 10km to my house! What should I do? Is it safe to continue? If I never post here again I guess you all can assume things didn't work out!

Ah... I fear You're in quite a pinch here... I was told my car would implode at 100K. Mine strangely didn't but I can't guarantee You'll be as fortunate.

There's only upside to this as you get to start over ;)

Seriously, I was at a car wash when the odometer in my ex-308 was reading 07XXX miles, and a passerby looked at me and the car with disbelief on his face and said "really, only seven thousand miles?" -- to which I replied "no, ONE HUNDRED and seven" (which impressed him in the other direction ;)).

I've looked at your photo for a while now with increasing concern.

To be honest if I were you I'd be more concerned that 4/5 of the Rev counter and 1/5 of the speedo are missing !!

I would have chopped these parts from mine to help out but sadly my speedo is in mph so wouldn't match.

    What should you do?

I'm really concerned that it's been nearly 24 hours and we've not heard back from Jim. The car is surely scrap by now, likely via catastrophic implosion.

Godspeed Jim! Our thoughts and prayers are with you! :)

Ok, believe it or not I timed the "magic moment" (the 99999 to 00000 change over) to a 6500 rpm shift from 3-4. I figured it if was all going to end I might as well be on a high note! Obviously by me posting this I'm still here.

PS, I did peek in the garage just before bed time to make sure it was still in one piece.

Are you still running the original chain tensioner?
If you are it would be very reassuring given the horror stories posted about replacing them.

I hope not. Driving fast enough to be doing 6500 rpm in third gear and also shifting and taking a picture. Sounds dangerous.

Brett rebuilt my engine so the chain, tensioner, and guides are new.

Well that is good for you but makes me say "Rats"!
Maybe Bret remembers the condition of the tensioner?
Bret, please chime in if you do remember this bit.

Ok, if I remember correctly the guides and tensioner were worn but still had some life in them. The engine had around 50,000KM on it. I think my car has had an interesting past. When Brett got a hold of it the engine was in pieces and the body was in primer. He did a major refresh on the engine. We had agreed to a price for the completed car which included paint, engine and transmission and replacing a couple of front suspensions bushings and new exhaust system. Brett would keep me informed on what was going on. There were several times I wanted more parts replaced then what we had originally agreed on and Brett was good at getting the extra parts I requested. Two examples of this is the exhaust valves were the sodium filled ones so we originally agreed to replace them and the intakes looked ok. I later decided I wanted all new intake valves and all new valve springs. Brett would come up with the additional cost associated with the upgrades and we went from there.
