I'd like to learn a lot more about these cars, especially the differences between the variations, what to look for when buying, etc. Surprisingly there isn't a sticky thread for this, and my search did not reveal a similar post.

Can someone point me to a book or web site that would get me up to speed?

Are there any reputable dealers or service centers that specialize in this series?

    Many thanks.

    Jack

There's a good article in the new issue of Classic and Sportscar, but it's short on the details I'm looking for.

The section will be a wealth of info for you. Keep reading. As far as differences go get to know these as separate cars:

I suspected that could be the case when I went there before posting this thread. The problem is I don't know what I don't know.:)

It's a bummer you didn't edit those errors, it's pretty quick to do. I really didn't read through it, just glanced & thought that wiki 'basically' explained the differences between the variants that the OP wanted to know. I just discovered that anyone can edit the info. via the Edit tab at the upper right, of which, I just did on the hp rating of the Series 2 (which read 310 hp before my change)

I took the liberty to make a minor change (although it can be considered a significant one). It did mention the 400 automatic gearbox is a Borg Warner instead of a GM THM400. Perhaps that explains why I noticed recently some online articles (and even car advertisements) were also incorrectly mentioning it does have a Borg Warner.

    May I edit 365  & add 400i Series 1 & 400i Series 2 while we're editing :D

Thank-you very much. Maybe if we all get in there to correct the misinformation, we could make the 365/400/412 one of the most accurate in Wiki-land :D

I added up all the different production numbers listed and reached a total of 2,907 cars produced over the manufacturing run. Does anyone know if this is accurate?

I was going to until discovering I'd need to sign up which means another junk mail database to be added to.

Something I never heard before is that cams and headers were changed in '82. Mine is a series I , supposedly an '82(39577). I'm curious if those mechanical changes, if so, apply only to series II cars or if I have an extra five ponies.
I guess knowing my car's build date would be helpful.

    :D LOL :D

I didn't need to, just look for the Edit tab in the upper right part of the page & you can just hop in there & do your stuff…no registering required. They do request a reason for your edit at the lower left section of the edit page before you 'Save' it.

My '83 manual shows 315bhp & I've read a # of times about the cam profiles & headers on the Series 2 but lets face it, it's only 5bhp!

The 412 was another matter. I'm suspecting the cams were the same as the Series 2 but I have read that it's the increase of 1mm on the bore plus a re-mapping of the FI that 'finally' got the #'s back to 340bhp. I also noticed that the 412 only has 2 center section mufflers like the 365 GT4 & the Daytona. Differences are that the 412 has 2 round cans where the 365 GT4 has 2 flat cans like the 400's style. What's even more puzzling is that the Daytona set-up has 2 round cans, one for each 3 cylinders, then they feed into a single flat can before exiting to the rear resonator. All of the above descriptions are for each bank. With all this switching around, it makes me believe Ferrari was struggling with exhaust engineering

Is there a specific version that attracts you? I personally prefer the series 1 400 over the series 2. Not a fan of the modified rear treatment of the 412 vs the 400 and the 365 as cool as it is has a sticker price I prefer to avoid.

I know whether it is accurate! ;)

Just pulling your chain. My numbers show a total of 2,906

    GT4 2+2 521
    400 501
    400i 1308
    412 576
    TOTAL 2906

Of that total, 1,360 (47%) have a 5 speed manual transmission.

No one really knows for sure, and numbers vary between sources.
Some sources state 502 for the 400 (carb) and 1810 for total 400 production is often quoted.
I've counted the 365s (by serial number) and arrive at 527. That doesn't mean there were definitely 527 365s as my information may not be 100% correct, but we can be pretty sure from the records that there were at least 525 produced.
412 production is usually quoted at 576 as John states, but it's not certain if that number includes the 3 prototypes.

Is there a general consensus on how many (or what approximate % even) of each series is manual 5 speed?

    Cheers!

Well I can get pretty close, maybe not exact, but pretty darn close when it comes to cars in the United States.

    400's
    • 83.3% Auto
    • 16.7% 5-speed

    400i's
    • 75.1% Auto
    • 24.9% 5speed

Longest running Ferrari model. When you compare the 365 to the 412 (especially in automatic transmission) they may look similar but really are very different.

5-speed ratios continued to climb with the 412 @ 47%
While America was calling for the Auto box in the beginning, production of the 5-speed increased as the variants evolved.

America was calling for the car, period. The only problem? It wasn't legal here from the factory. But you already knew that.
