    I assume that a good place for jack stands on a 400i, that won't hurt the car or me, is the large tube frame, near suspension attachment points...

    That will work. I just put somthing on the handstands not to gouge frame. Right or wrong I use crossmember in front of pan to lft front and rear diff to lift rear. As a matter of fact did it today. Good luck.

    Not sure I'd use the rear diff because you'd be pulling at the mounts. I put a flat 2x4 across the little points at the end of the frame rails. Just watch out for the fuel box in front of the cross member.
