I was keen to improve the high beam performance on my car so I consulted my Owner's Manual (for a change !) and read in section 5.14 that the High beam lights are HB3 60W so I duly ordered a pair of Osram Night Breaker Unlimited(s).

With the new bulbs on my desk, I then set out to switch them over only to find that the high beam bulbs on my car are H1 fitment. Curiously, section 5.8 describes the procedure to replace the bulbs and the second drawing clearly shows the back of an H1 fitment bulb!

So it would appear that reference to HB3 is a misprint in the Owner's Manual for my European delivered (Swiss market) car? Is HB3 used in other markets??

H1 on the left, HB3 on the right for anyone interested.

I have the HB3 bulbs on my 4 various 575M's that I have owned...3 US Spec and 1 Canadian Spec cars.
I don't recall what my US Spec Barchetta had when I replaced one of the bulbs at that time.

Interesting! I wonder if the factory highbeam performance of NA spec cars with their HB3 60W is significantly better than those fitted with the H1 55Ws.

I will report back once I have tried the Osram Night Breaker Unlimited H1 55W as they claim that they are up to 110% brighter than ordinary halogen bulbs.....

I have used night breakers, they are good but dim quickly with age in my experiance. I swapped every 4ish years as a result.

OSRAM Night Breaker Unlimited 55w H1 now fitted to my European/Swiss spec car...

Although there is a slight blue tinge to the bulbs, in practice, the colour temperature is still pretty warm and not too different from a regular halogen but I'm happy with the results.

P.S. I noted that the headlight covers actually have the bulb types moulded into them which would have saved me the hassle of, and confusion caused by, RTFM!
