Hey all. I'm trying to find a spare wheel for the wife's 456GT. Looking at the spare parts breakdown, it seems there is a space saver option. Has anyone had any experience with a spare on their 456, either space saver or otherwise?

Yes, apparently they are still available as a factory part, bit pricey though.

I bought a tyre puncture kit from Supercheap and leave that in the boot as with an air pump as aposed to the factory can.

I read somewhere that the space saver in modern volvos fit. Might have been on here but i'm too lazy to search :p

But where do you put the original once you have a space saver on? It won't fit in the boot

Two good points but I'll check, as I kept a rear and a front tyre.
As for the Volvo spare I'll look into that.
The Ferrari original spares have a bag to put the wheel in to keep the car interior clean.

I read the same thing somewhere Greg. Let us know if the original wheel fits Graeme. I've got a hunch there is plenty of room in the wheel well. The cover comes off anyway, but the bag is a good idea.

I will check if the rear fits tomorrow.
    I found some helpful data
    456 wheel info
    PCD 5x108
    Stud M14x1.5
    Center bore 67.1

    5x108.0 - Bolt pattern - Wheel-Size.com

My wife's XC60 has a space saver spare but the centre bore is 63.4mm, shame, keep looking

I have the spare wheel option in my 456. I can take measurements/pics if interested.
5x108 is also used on the Alfa 166 and indeed some Volvos and Fords.

Excellent, and thanks for the link.
Now for some homework, as I am not keen on the PCD change.
I note there are quite a lot of 108/4.25 PCD wheels in Aus
One other idea is to find a Styrofoam insert with a jack and the wrench.
The little locating lug (FIAT) is for the disc retention/ wheel alignment.

The Volvo XC90 up to 2014 has the PCD, Center Bore, wheel studs to match the 456. I particularly like this as its designed to take the weight.

I'm going to try my wife's space saver Graeme. She has an S60 Volvo. If all I have to do is increase the bore size, it could be an option. I'll let you know. Surely this would be a cheaper option?

I've got a Volvo space saver for my 550. It came from a 2001 S70 from memory. 26 UK Pounds on ebay. :)
It does need some spacers to clear the caliper and take up the thread length of the wheel bolts.
As 550 wheels fit 456 the Volvo wheel should be OK on a 456.

Also one thing to remember is that when a 456/550 has a flat an ordinary jack won't fit underneath. I bought one of those inflatable bag accessories that plug into the cigar lighter to inflate it.

I also read somewhere that the stock 456/550 tire/wheel, especially the rear tire/wheel, will not fit in the trunk/boot of the 456/550.

If you carry a spare, you also have to carry shovel to dig a hole to bury the tire/wheel to hide it, and then go back later and pick it up with your pickup truck. It might fit in the back seat of the 456.

Maybe, you can get enough of it in the trunk/boot to carry it, and then carry a bungie cord or rope to hold the trunk/boot lid down.

I haven't tried to put either stock tire/wheel in my 550 or 456 trunk/boot, but it looks like it would be a pretty tight fit just to lay it down it the trunk/boot with the trunk/boot lid open.

this made me laugh out loud - i have the space saver on my 550 - thank the heavens that I have never needed to use it - but it looks like it might work in a tight squeeze

    Success!
Bought a Volvo XC90 space saver spare which has the same spec tyre, centre bore and PCD
As the Ferrari. As the Volvo is heavier then I have no concerns about the steel rim strength.

I had a 30mm hub centric spacer made so I can use the original wheel bolts.
The spacer har 10 X15mm holes at the same PCD and is a snug fil over the disc retaining pin and bolt head. Lots clearance and is easy to use.

If any one is interested I have had more spacers made as per the previous Photos to mount a Volvo XC90 Space Saver on a 456 with original bolts.
Other items needed are Volvo XC90 space saver, Jack plus handle, 22mm wheel wrench $100US each plus postage. PM me if you're interested.

The 360 space saver spare works perfectly on the 456. I made a spare kit with jack and pump that fits in the passenger side back seat. Put it in a red laundry bag.

    Cheers,

    George

Interesting option, its probably the same part number rim.
The red laundry bag is a nice touch!
