Once again, I am about to review a sportscar that is worth more-or-less the same as my 575 (gated manual, 2004, FHP). Last one was a DB11, which I posted about, this one is a 991.2 Turbo S, which, with options, costs around £175k, which is around the trade value of my 575.

In a few months, the Porsche will be around the same price as more Maranellos...

On the one hand, I doubt anyone who has a V12 two seat front engined RWD Maranello would swap it for a TT 2+2 new 4WD rear engined 6 cyl Porsche which can be used every day, everywhere. On the other, not only do they cost the same, they are both (broadly) 200 mph European supercars with more than 500 horsepower and a tendency towards GT manners as well as the ability to enjoy a thrash. For anyone but a cognoscento, this makes them more similar to each other than they are to most things on the road.

Also, I know people trade from Maranellos to 599s and F12s, and for me an F12 is as different, maybe more different, to a Maranello as the Turbo S.

So, the question: would anyone here ever consider a new Turbo S (zero to sixty in 2.6) instead of their Maranello (not, as well as!).

"Mine" arrives tomorrow and I will be driving it on the favourite roads of my 575.

They cost the same now, but one of them is going to cost half as much as the other one in three years max, great as a car as it may be.

Try buying a used (3year old) Turbo S for half the price as new. That doesn't happen.

I look at 911's as complimentary to the modern, but pre-F12, twelve cylinder cars (599, 550, 575). I've had this discussion several times with friends and family. I feel like the F12 is the "ultimate daily" to many people if you're in the right climate. That makes it a direct competitor to the incumbent and reigning champion of daily duty - the 911 Turbo.

So to answer your question, I would not replace the 550 with a 991.2 Turbo S based on the 550's esoteric, timeless, and emotional merits. However I would likely take a .2TTS over an F12 for a few reasons (price, purpose, utility, german engineering, image). The real question is when the F12 and TTS are par (meaning used F12 pricing drifts down to new TTS pricing), what do you do? I'd probably still stick with the 911, but I'm a big Porsche guy and celebrate their epic daily-ness, whereas I think the F12 is compromised in it's Ferrari-ness by virtue of being able to compete with a Turbo on that level!

Interesting question. I would say the german car is something you can enjoy every day, which eventually will give you a lot of joy. The 575 will be more of a hot "arrive at the casino" car in the future, but not that much user friendly. To be honest, I would have had the 575 and got a more normal car for the everyday tasks. Maybe also buy a 964 or 993 for the fun factor. A mint condition gated 575 is now soon in the top level of any cars and I do mean that it is a bad thing to get rid of it. Do you want to pay 50% more to get it back in 4 years from now?

It really depends on your purpose.

If you want a Ferrari in the garage and plan to use it as a fair weather driver or use it less frequently then there is no way I would ever make this move.

If its meant as a daily sports car that you can take anywhere and squirting past the highway on ramp is critical, then the 911 becomes more appealing.

To me Ferrari and anything else is apples and oranges and so thus, I would never make this move. I might consider adding a 911 or other car to the stable.

Interesting question that I have asked myself in the past and have thought about again in the last year.

When I bought my 575 manual 3 yrs ago I was torn between it and the 997.1 turbo. As a "long time Porsche owner" and a "never Ferrari owner" I listed the pro's and cons for each car. At the time , they were priced pretty much the same.

Long story short I bought the 575. Drive it every chance I get , Costco , Walmart or a run to the mountains just for the hell of it. I really , really want a Turbo S (2014) but I just can't bear to part with the 575 now that I have come to know her.

Only one solution...I've been saving my schekels and hopefully will get the turbo S sometime this year.

Looking forward to hearing your comparison.

I'd consider trading for a manual V12 Aston DBS maybe...the 911 just doesn't seem to be in the same class personally as far as driving experience goes.

Not half the price as new. Half the price as the other one, in 3 years, oh yes . Turbo S price going one direction only, manual F V12 the opposite direction. So they cost the same for a new york minute only!

And there you have my answer, Darius! :)

Personally, a car is all about how it makes me feel. That subjective and intangible x-factor. A Ferrari (let alone a Ferrari V12) gets under my skin faster and deeper than a Porsche (any Porsche) ever could. My partial and humble opinion based on my personal (biased!) experience, preference and taste.

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.

Honestly, never asked myself the same question....

For time being always went for my personal dream car of each decade and brand. Tried to buy them, when they where at their bottom lines and affordable. Made it with my 993, the C2 Corvette an some S-Class Mercedes.

At some point I lost the interest in more modern cars, even sure, they are more capable, loud, comfortable or sportive than their elderly counter part.

Never dreamed about to own an 991 TT, even knowing that they are exceptional capable and fast cars (…reliable as well…). So for me personally not a point to change the Maranello for one of these type of cars, including some other modern Ferraris. Nice cars, but just not mines....

Darius- A more pertinent question might be if you would swap for a 599 HGTE or an F12.

I'd trade my 550 for a 275 GTB... I have a Porsche and like it very much. It's the old saying: you date a Ferrari , but marry a Porsche..

No, I would not trade my 550 for the Porsche. Its not financially feasible, but the only car I would trade my 550 for would be a Miura.

Today, as I was sitting at my local Porsche dealership discussing the lead time for a 911 Turbo S order and the trade value of my 575 and my DD, a fellow f-chat member who knew where I was texted me to give me a heads up about this thread.

Of course, all situations and preferences are individual but for me, if I can get 80%-90% of the joy of driving the 575 from the Turbo S, and get it 100% of the time as opposed to the 100% joy from the 575 10% of the time, I would get more absolute joy from the Turbo S.

I came to this realization after a year with an E63 S AMG as a daily driver. By almost every "tangible" measure, (other than top speed) the AMG outperforms the 575 and for me I probably get 75% of the joy of driving the 575 from the AMG.

So, why not upgrade my DD to a fairly bullet proof world class performer and eliminate the problem of leaving a great car in the garage 100% of the time?

btw, I considered a 2015 FF but the depreciation curve on those has been breath taking and I am not convinced it would be a bullet proof DD. Also, it may have been a bit too conspicuous as a DD.

Maybe, I am ready to stop dating a mistress and get married. On the other hand, my mistress sure is sexy! :)

If you wanted an open car, this would be a good option for sure. I have a manual shift DB9 Volante for comparison that is functionally similar to the DBS, and must confess that it is a bit easier to use than the 550. Functioning cruise control is just one example of creature comforts that come in the Aston and are prerequisites for a DD. And the Aston is way more classy and distinct than the Porsche IMHO...but i'm just not a German car guy...no matter how good they may be...

You must be in your 40s.

I have the same feeling. I simply refuse to invest money in a modern day car. Capable as it might be. Unfortunately I have to and what I am looking at is not pretty.

    First world problems I guess.

I love the 991!! But at our annual outdoor car show, there are all sorts of great classic sports cars. About one thousand the last years. The problem is that about 250-300 of them are Porsches, and about 150-200 of them are 911s.... So people see alot of great Porsches, but no one examine every car because it would take too long time. That means the interest from the public is not the same for Porsche. This is one of the differences. But don't misunderstand. The car is great in every aspect.

    Very interesting replies!

I should add that I have a mistress in each country as I own a 996 Turbo S coupe manual, same year (2004) as my 575. But it's not worth the same $$ as the 575 and never will be.

So far I have only done the school run in the Porsche.

V interesting point John (Senna5194) made about use x enjoyment. I have put my 996 TT S up for sale because I purchased a C63 AMG (6.3) wagon as a DD last year; when your DD is such fun, your weekend cars need to be clearly more enjoyable, and the AMG was probably better on both counts, with the engine edging it.

Anyway driving the 991.2 TT S properly later this week to answer this hypothetical question.

Hi All, despite being half out of the V12 game, more of which later, I would say no.

My wife test drove a 911 (admitedly "only" a Targa 4s) recently with me along as a passenger, and just as the Golf GTI is the 911 of hot hatches the 911 felt like the Golf GTI of super cars.

That is not an insult, in many ways its a huge compliment, but there is nothing like the same same sense of occasion you get from a Maranello.

She has subsequently ordered a Cali T HS, which, whilst not a V12 and ignored by some purists , I am really rather happy about.
