When I posted these two images yesterday on another thread I noticed that the later cars (including the SA) have a slightly different intake manifold with two seemingly redundant additional protrusions cast onto the front although I can only see the one part number [#181061 - Suction Manifold] in the catalogue...

It may have been done to make the manifold casting reversible. The actuator mounts in about that position on the left rear side. It may have also been changed for an anticipated change that never happened. 91 TR valve cover casting had a design change that was not used.

550'S had a diagnosis plug under the dash that was never used and their instrument panels were equipped with TPMS capability that was never used. That stuff is all over the cars.

The 612 has the linkage for the variable length intake on the front of the engine, so, like Brian said, Ferrari may have been looking at doing the same for the 575M, but never followed through, or they just wanted to use the same casting for both. Looks like Ferrari made the change in 2003 and 612 production actually started in late 2003. There is another thread on this subject buried in here somewhere. My Nov 2003, AN 52428 has the front mount casting.

Ah ha! It looks like the 612 engine may be be mounted that bit further back in the chassis (closer to the bulkhead/firewall) and they were obliged to move that actuator to the front.

P.S. I see that there is a different part number for the 612 manifold #194671

Yup, the passages may have been hogged out a bit more.
