Today was one of those great days in Atlanta: sunny with moderate temperatures and low humidity. Made even better by being off from work and having a freshly waxed (always waxed!) spider in the garage. So after a good workout at the "gym" and the car getting a good workout I realized I needed to pick up lunch on my way home. Fortunately it was before the noon rush wherein soccer/lacrosse moms in SUVs on cellphones ignore every good driving rule. Especially in the strip center that had what I wanted. So I ventured into this area I know well and got one of the few spots that has my car protected. A police sergeant who I don't know watched me pull in. Being of an age that I grew up in, I have an unusual respect/aversion of teachers and policeman to this day. It doesn't matter that I have no police record nor did I go to parochial school. It is just that irrational inner child thing. So, when the officer comes up to me, roof/windows down and says' "I know this car is good for around 200mph. Now don't lie to me and tell me how fast you have been in it." Told him 110. Fast enough that he knew I was probably telling the truth (120 more accurate) and probably disappointed too. Had a great conversation with him and finished my errands. So much for irrational fears.
That is of course until I got home! Turns out I didn't have my driver's license!! Drove my daughter to school and brought our dogs to give them a mega walk. Had taken my license out of my wallet so I didn't have to carry the wallet on the walk. Forgot to put it back in.
Thank god this was a car guy or I would be wasting my "one call" on this post!!
Hope you guys are as amused as I was at the irony of it.

Every once in awhile you cut a break.

I'm sure we can all tell a 'good cop' story or two. I recall being stopped in my 512BB by an NJ State Trooper who said frankly that he just wanted to check out the car. But he did ask for papers.

Then there was the NM local cop who looked like he was still in high school. Got stopped for 40mph over. He came up to me in the car (an R8), smiled and said, "I know it was mostly the car."

Generally I have found the police to be very professional and serious about their jobs. That doesn't mean that I will always be completely within the law on the road.

    Nice!

Once an Officer in a car right next to me in stand still traffic asked how much horsepower the car had. My response: please don't arrest me if I tell you ;)

I had a cop ask me the same question, my answer. "147, at the Kentucky Speedway".

I was taking my GF home one night in my 911 turbo and get stopped at a DUI check point. Officer leans in and says we have a problem. I asked what was that? He said we need to drive your car. LOL.

Another time some buddies and I blew that doors off a cop in Colorado on motorcycles at at 120mph. He stopped us, looked at how old we were, shook his head and let us go.

I have been stopped twice in the 458 this year. Got a ticket both times though. To be honest, the two different officers were both courteous. Neither one asked a single question about the car.

When I first got my car, I took it driving around the convention center on a Sunday here in Dallas because they have these long tunnels that really bring out the exhaust note. Just to be clear, there was nothing going on so no people around. I made two passes because it sounded so good...apparently the sound got the attention of a nearby officer who came to check it out. Guy pulls me over and asks what I was doing. I was honest - told him I had just gotten the car and it sounded really good in the tunnel. He was very courteous and frankly more interested in the car. Apparently he was a total gear head and proceeded to ask several technical questions, most of which I could not answer. He asked politely to see the engine then asked that I not do that around the convention center, even directing me to a better spot where he winds up his personal car. Very cool guy...

I pulled into the parking lot of my favorite lunch eatery/. As I parked I saw in my rear view mirror a police car was parked perpendicular behind me and an officer standing next to the rear of my car. Knowing I have a tendency to "enjoy" my car, I exited the car and immediately reached for my wallet in the same motion, expecting to be asked to hand over my drivers license. Keep in mind, my car is registered in California with all rear lights painted black ("illegal").The officer said hello and told me h e he never really gets close to these cars, so asked if he could spend a few minutes with me. I enjoyed a few minutes with a fellow car guy (in uniform). Best

My wife, who can be a bit of a leadfoot, once stepped on her 911's throttle to get through a yellow light. She really didn't make it through. A cop saw it and pulled her over, with me in the passenger seat. The cop tells her that he saw her go through when the light turned red. My wife protests, saying the car couldn't stop before the light turned red. Without missing a beat, the cop says, "I also have a 911 and I KNOW they can stop." He did let her go.
