My car didn't come with the Ferrari trickle charger but I do still have my Turbo S charger, which I've never used. Will it work on my Speciale? It seems to be a simple 'plug into lighter and socket' thingy. It looks like I don't have to fiddle with my battery. If it does work, does the car have to be on, and will it actually charge the battery just by plugging it in the socket?

No it will not. You cannot charge the battery via the power plug. There is a special plug receptical under the pass foot well that the Ferrari charger has, which is made by ctek but not sold outside Ferrari parts/dealers.

Ah man! I don't even have the tools for removing the passenger foot well :( Why on earth would Ferrari make it so difficult?!

It won't hurt to try it, right? lol

you won't need any tools......you just need the adapter from your charger's secondary to the plug in your passenger's foot well.....

It's under the very right side under the dash/glove box console, foot well to the right near the door. It's that way on the 458 Italia...I can't imagine the speciale would be different. Check your manual. You do not need to access the battery itself. Order one from a Ferrari dealers parts dept.

    So here guys?
    Please forgive my utter ignorance

Also is the reason the cigarette lighter charge won't work because the CL doesn't work when the car is off? Then if I turn on the auxiliary power, theoretically it should work, no?

And yes, I did use snap chat for that pic lol

Battery conditioner info is in the owners manual index under battery. It is on page 214 in the Italia manual. Always plug the conditionioner into the car first, then plug the charger into the wall outlet. When you want to disconnect it, unplug the charger from the wall outlet first then unplug From the car socket.

Thank you! Purchased it this morning and that's precisely what I did!

You have no idea how much that helped! I was under a preconceived notion that the actual battery had to be manually disconnected probably due to the fact that I saw a YouTube video on how to connect a ctek charger to the f430 which is quite a bit older and hence does not have the practical plug n play system of the latter.

A bit off topic but don't you guys hate the location of the charging port? IMO, it is in the worst place one can think of. Why can't they put it somewhere which is much easier to access :(

    Another Q on this topic:

I have 4 CTEKs all in all, so I was thinking of swapping the
rather lame Ferrari-charger (does not seem to charge as well
as the "real" CTEKs) by cutting the cable and attaching the
Ferrari-connector to the cable of another CTEK.

Why does that special Ferrari-connector have _3_ poles even
though all chargers would work with just _2_ poles ?!? Is
    that 3rd pole a status-indicator "Original Ferrari-charger
connected" so that other chargers will not work ? Tech-pros
    to the rescue, please !

    Cheers,
    Ulli

I sent a PM to webraider because I don't know enough to answer the question completely. LOL. But here's the information I sent hoping to be helpful :)

I have a Speciale and I wanted to use a CTEK battery charger that was better than the Ferrari-branded CTEK battery charger (I bought the CTEK 3300). I also wanted to be able to use the built-in connector in the dashboard. I contacted CTEK, but they do not offer the adapter cable. I don't think Ferrari sells an adapter cable either. I don't feel comfortable cutting up the Ferrari-branded cable and attaching it to a new CTEK battery charger (I'd screw it up somehow), so I contacted an fchat guy named Warren Kumari who makes his own adapter cables for about $90. I bought one from him a couple months ago, and it's first class and works great.

I don't know if it matters, but we're 110V here in the US. Are you 110 or 220V?

    https://www.kumari.net/index.php/cars/ferrari-battery-charger-cable

I'm not sure if Warren has any adapter cables available (it seems to be something he does as a labor of love), but a friend of mine bought one a few weeks ago.

Yes, he made two for me, too, Rick. By the way, the replacement charger that Ferrari sent (to replace the original charger that came with the car) is a larger CTek with a similar adapter cable.

Just to complete the thread, here is the replacement charger that Ferrari sent to replace the original unit under warrantee. The CTEK model is the larger one (it seems a 5 amp). It came with this adapter.

Why would one use anything but a certified Ferrari charger on a $300k car?

because the CTEK 7002 is a superior AGM battery charger in every way. 8 charging steps. I'm not even sure the Ferrari puts out 14.7 volts which is optimal for AGM charging. The net benefit...your battery will last longer and hold a better charge over its life cycle.

CTEK makes the OEM Ferrari charger...it's not as sophisticated as the CTEK branded models 7002 and 3300
