*Disclaimer, yes I searched before posting, my apologies if this is redundant, I just would like help/advice, thank you in advance I currently have a 991GT3 with an integrated 9500ci and laser diffusers front and rear. I like the GPS memory function. The laser diffusers have saved me twice in the two years of ownership! In order to get a similar system installed I'd have to part with the 458 for a week and send it to Dallas as no one local has experience. Not to mention $3500 (radar mirror integration) and the car is only for occasional weekend use. I cringe at the fact the dash will be modified and the bumper etc will need removal. Modified cars are frowned upon for resale as well is my understanding of the Ferrari community. I've been looking at the new Escort 360 max (willing to forgo the laser diffusers as they are not legal here and have only helped on 2 occasions) the problem is the cigarette lighter connection seems flimsy and it's too far away from the windshield. I've read the thread here about the blend mount. Anyone have experience with connecting the radar to the mirror electronics and is it always "on" etc.? Please post up your current radar strategy and solutions and if possible with pictures. I'm not completely opposed to getting an integrated system if that's the thing to do. Thank you all Image Unavailable, Please Login
My DD 991 Turbo also has an Escort 9500ci integrated solution, so when it came to a solution for the 458, it was an easy "yes" as to a similar setup, as I didn't want anything on the windshield. As you point out, the lighter plug is a long way from the windshield, so running a cable from there would be a mess. I have no doubt you could *carefully* run a switched-power wire down the A pillar to hardwire a 360 to a Blendmount or windshield mount if you wanted to, but I didn't want a device to clutter my view or serve as an invitation for someone to break window glass if I left it mounted. One such broken glass incident probably "pays" for the integrated solution. My installer put the radar receiver in one of the radiator intakes and attached the small control box with double-sided tape so that there are no holes left if later I remove it. I went for the radar mirror so I wouldn't have to also mount another box in the interior. The one possible downside is that the receiver would not have as much range down there in the radiator intake compared to the high mounted windshield unit, but my unit seems to have adequate range.
I HATED pluging my redline into the cigarette lighter so I got the escort 9500 ci with laser jammers in all my cars. I had my friend list my car for sale. Here's the link and you can see the pictues of where the laser jammers were placed and the display is in the mirror and the control is under the steering wheel. Used 2014 Ferrari 458 Spider For Sale | Sterling VA The only bad thing was I picked a blue display for mirror so with the top down it isn't the best. I should have choose the red display but I love this set up. Also have a gt3, GREAT car.
Wow. Thank you both! Carz your spider is amazing!!! Please keep the suggestions coming. Need4speed please post a pic of your control box location with the double sided tape if you have a chance.
9500ci in my 458...will be doing the same for my F12 when built. I also use Valentine 1 in my daily driving Porsche cayenne....the best cheap solution.
I just use a savvy and a V1. You are not going to get away with running faster than traffic in a Ferrari anyway. The installer for the 9500c in my 458 dud a $1000 worth of damage.
I used to be a big V1 user. I still have it in some cars like the 458. I pair the V1 in a custom install with f&r blinders for laser. It works well. But the V1 was never designed for a custom install and as I understand it Mike Valentine never had much interest to build a custom kit nor any kind of 21st century type technologies like GPS. I recently tried the Escort Passport Max 360 and I am now convinced. It has the arrows as the Valentine but the GPS learning function is terrific. I think both have about the same sensitivity, but the Max360 also has speed and traffic cameras, speed trap info etc. To my mind the V1 was the best of the 20th Century but so far this new Max360 is the best of the 21st. The 9500Ci is like a generation before the 360 but its built for custom install (hence the CI). Im hopeful they will make a CI version for the 360- I am reasonably sure its coming. Right now I just run the 360 in my daily car and its great.
Great suggestion! CI version of 360 would be worth waiting for if one is considering a 9500ci now. I'll probably get a ticket while waiting is the problem :-0
Ouch, I can only imagine, picture taken from google search of radar install: Image Unavailable, Please Login
Mine's mounted under steering wheel. No drilling anywhere with my install, only double sided tape. Installer is obviously very important. I also can't use the one's installed on windshield as they are illegal in VA so I have to go stealth...
I have my 9500CI controller mounted on the center console. Easy to hit the mute button to temp disable laser shifters when being gunned after you slow down to let them get a reading. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Just checked with radar mirror folks, no information on a 360max ci version. Will likely go for the 9500ci as that seems the consensus.
In the end, I doubt a 360max will avoid a ticket that the 9500 equipped car would of gotten. If your on/off KA gunned (no cars ahead of you to give you a warning), your busted no matter what your detector is.
Here it is. The downside is you can't see it well from the driving position, but it's easily reached to press "mute" when needed. Image Unavailable, Please Login
No one suggesting 'Stinger'? Perhaps too pricey for your weekend drive but they are unit to beat currently. I have one in my Speciale with the credit card sized touch screen positioned beyond the 'cup holders' in the centre console (just beyond your knee in terms of distance). I use a Passport Max (didn't bother with the $500 extra to get the 360 Max as I don't care where the radar is coming from I just want to know! Besides the 'Max' still has front and rear facing sensors) in my Mazda 3 daily driver which is hard wired and sits high on the screen to the left of my mirror. Attracting thieves is a concern as they can see a 2 inch sucker on the screen. Hoping the Mazda is safe anyway 😉. Personally wouldn't buy a radar with no GPS lock out ability. Check out Stinger for a look, $7800 NZD but worth it for the Spesh! All the best!
Sorry bumping an older thread but I figured it'd better than start a dup. and this topic should interest a few people. Waze works very well in densely populated areas. Short of that, countermeasures are a must. For the DYIs out here, how did you hard wire your radar detector in the 488? As a windshield unit my favorite piece is the Escort Redline. The newer Escort models are so voluminous, it is not acceptable and I don't need GPS or Bluetooth. Nothing beats the sensitivity of the Redline or V1 once they are configured properly for a windshield-mounted piece. Cheers.
Escort says that the Redline is their best unit for picking up radar and laser. I have two. They report K and Ka before the police car is visible, including on winding roads.
