My brother has a 488 and is looking at a 720s. He is concerned about value on resale on the 720. He would have the car Dec or Jan. He usually keeps a car for about 7 months. Since all the dealers say the car is sold out for the first model year, how much if any do you think the car will go down in price in 7 months. He is thinking of giving the dealership back the 488 and ordering a 2018 488. Opinions please.

If I had a nickel for every dealer who said a model that hasn't even been made yet is "sold out for the first year" I'd be Bill Gates.

That goes for Ferrari who said when the California was announced it was "already sold out for 2 years in advance". Oh yah.. the Corvette C7 as well.

    Sure.....

IMO, if you are worried about depreciation then you're worried about the wrong thing. One fender bender with some idiot in a Camry and all your plans for reselling it easily without losing money go up in smoke.

Buy it because you want it and can afford it. If you can't, then don't.

I can get on the list to get a new 720 tomororw if I wanted. 720 is a great fast car, Much better than 650. But it's a different brand, different marquee and depreciation is the great unkwown. You can get 650 spiders for sub 190 any day, some in the low 180s asking.

Like mayor said- buy the car and enjoy it. It's gonna be great. But depreciation is unknown here for this brand.

For around $240K with 2K miles. Most newly ordered 2017 720s with popular CF options and sports exhaust are around $320K. If I can achieve that next year, I'd not trade or sell my 458. Judging from McLaren's used car history, it is not unrealistic. I'll skip the 488 this time around and wait for its replacement in 2020.

So your brother cares about depreciation, but has no problem doing a trade and undertake the expense of just having a newer MY?

720S will depreciate at least $50K in those 7 months. It's normal.

A big impact of 720s is going to be to depreciate the 488 more. it'll take customers away from the re-sale market of 488.

Most of the customers getting the 720s in the first round are repeat mclaren customers so they would have additional money in the car so doubt they will be unloading them quickly so it should hold.

Also, it seems that for a dealer in the States to get a 720s allocation they have to have a customer behind it. A little difficult for the new dealers who are trying to establish market share but good for the in demand areas as the cars will get allocated to them. There shouldn't be a situation where there is a list of 35 people in san francisco in line to get one but a new one sitting unsold in a different market. This is all going to help the depreciation aspect of things.

I do not get these questions, get what you want and enjoy it. Who gives a crap, if you have to care that much you probably should not be buying a Ferrari etc. Buy what you can afford and want and enjoy, life is too short

Mc Laren has improved turbo technology and uses now twinscroll turbochargers like
Ferrari on 488. But: 720 S has still no direct fuel injection, only with direct fuel
injection you can reach fast turbo response or throttle response ( scavenging).
Engine technology is cleary better at 488 and engine of 488 has a lot more temper
    and entertainment below 4000 rpm.

720 S is faster over 250 kph, but due to very short gear ratio up to 250 kph
488 is only little bit slower.

Questionable is Mc Laren concerning design and model policy:

As owner of 488 GTB I know 488 GTO is coming and that was it.

Mc Laren is searching for final desing, every 6 month new model on same
    platform

He should be worried about the value loss on 488 as well, its going to lose money as well, maybe not as much as 488, but no one really knows. All these cars lose money, just buy and enjoy like everyone else says....

720s has really good throttle response trust me. If it wasn't for the spooling sounds you'd have a hard time knowing its turbocharged.

Flipping seems like so much work and worry centered around the least satisfying aspect of ownership.

the 720s will depreciate just like the 650s. Tell him to fork down some money for a 675LT or get his name on the list for the future 488 speciale. he already bought a 488 so i think he would have a good shot at getting one.

the 720s is objectively a better car than the 488. its a brand new chassis whereas the 488 is a reworked 458 with turbos. but really... both cars are absurdly fast. buy the one you like to look at / listen to / drive.

I'd personally grab a Speciale over either...but the 488 doesn't do it for me for some reason. For that reason I'd go with the 720S but I would apply lube when it comes time to sell in 7 months.

I think your brother shouldn't worry about depreciation. Lets face it they are not limited editions like the LaFerrari, P1, TDF, or Aperta. At the end of the day its how your brother feels after test driving the 720S or 488. I'm sure after a year he can pick one of them up at a good price.

As for me I pick the 488. Its a stunning car and owning a 599GTB, 458 italia, F12, and 458 Speciale the 488GTB is a rocket. I'm excited to see how they manage all the power on the 488 "light-weight".

Wow what a WHINER. This guy is an idiot.

In fact what is surprising to me is that he bought it new way under MSRP in the first place. And he's complaining?

I think he's complaining that even though the car had lost $67,000 in the first 6-12 months it went on to lose another $8,000 in 6 months with no bottom in sight...

That's McLaren resale....or what resale I should say (must be competing with Rolls Royce for fastest depreciating car)

The guy just seems like a telemarketer, "But wait there's more!"... his "system" only works if you don't drive the car and no accidents. He mentions a $198K purchase price, but was that bought new, or used?

I'm sure many 488 owners thought they would get MSRP back on their ordered cars, it sounds good on paper, but not a reality.

MSRP is an imaginary number whether it is a car or "list/ tag/ sticker" price of a dress or camera. He says he bought the car at $198 sold it months later for $190 yet he says he loved it but whined about that time enjoying it costing him $8k (of course minus taxes and scheduled maintenance). Not seeing where that is a "loss" at all. Unless you get a limited edition Ferrari that's a great deal!

Back to the original posting - most everyone in this thread is purely speculating on future values of a car not yet released, they are doing so based upon previous cars... Not the 720S. Yes same mfg, no not the same car which those on this site w ooho have actually had the chance to experience it have done nothing but raved about it.
