I am considering the purchase of a 2007 599 with the F1 transmission and have got a copy of the service records and a recent PPI. What do you make of the following clutch wear:

    07/2009, 1425 miles, 9% clutch wear
    02/2010, 2460 miles, 54% clutch wear
    05/2012, 6566 miles, 72% clutch wear
    12/2012, 8347 miles, 74% clutch wear

Would wear like this be indicative of abuse or some heavy track use from mile 1425 to mile 2460 where the clutch went from 9% worn to 54% worn in 6 months and 1000 miles? Any thoughts or insights would be appreciated. Thanks.

Seems really odd. That's a lot of wear in 2460 miles!! Suszpect that someone doesn't know how to shift with paddles, tracked the car a lot, or lived in a hilly region. Were each of those measures with changes in ownership?

No the dates don't coincide with ownership changes. It appears to be a 4 owner car but I'm not clear on the transfer dates. The dates I listed are from the service records that I have. The same company serviced the car from mile 1425 to mile 6566 (7/2009 to 5/2012).

Got comfortable and started launching it maybe. One thing about F1, launching will just send benjamins flying from under the car.

Does launch mode chew up the clutch?

Maybe the prior owner had a drag racing habit. . .

Any idea what the cost is to replace the clutch? Ihave a call into a dealer but no response yet.

The four prior owners put only 2200 miles on the car. Buffoons!!! Especially considering MSRP was $378K and it probably was had for $500K off the line!!

Do you have tester print outs? Check the clutch Overheat time, that's the best way to spot abuse. Overheat time cannot be erased or changed unless the TCU is replaced. Clutch wear readings can easily be changed

That sounds more normal, 74% after only 8347 miles suggests to me that this one was run hard and put away wet.

Wow ... these figures seem quite high to me ... I have 11800 Miles on my 599, I use it as a daily driver and my clutch at last inspection 2 months ago was at 20% wear.

Granted the car has never been tracked, there are no hills anywhere near here and most of the miles were done on the motorway. I used launch control only a couple of times, the first of which I honestly thought that I must have killed the clutch but surprisingly its still in good shape.

Lets hope it stays this way :)

Clutch wear on an early 612 with single plate clutch, same one used on the 456/M, 550, and 575 cannot be correlated to the 599 with its dual plate clutch.

Transport truck drivers have been known to put on the parking brake to help drive up the ramp to the upper deck of their trailers. That would just about do it for a 612 clutch.

Just had the annual service for my 09 599. The report says that clutch currently at 20% wear so I guess the first owner was treating the car very well on the past 4 years.

I have 14,750 km on mine.

that is really good. the dealer intake inspection when i bought mine at 11891mi (19137km) was 41%, after 5 1/2 yrs on the road. and i thought that was more than reasonable.

p.s. okay, so obviously using launch control would be bad for the clutch, but i was curious about the above comment on 'didn't know how to use the paddles'. what is the 'wrong way' to use the paddles?

secondly, does downshifting to brake significantly wear the clutch as well? thoughts on wear of clutch vs. wear of the ceramic brakes?

I can smell the tang of clutch!

If not driven correctly one could sizzle the clutch easily, the best way is by reversing up a hill.

I bought a 599 a few weeks ago. Prior to purchase i was told that there remained over 60% wear on the clutch.
Amongs many problems, the clutch was smoking from the bonnet last week, and struggled to reverse with slippage.
Currently with the dealer - wondering whether they will replace it or challenge me to pay for it.
Since purchase, the car did 600 miles of which 400 was motorway.
I cant understand why a 60% remaining clutch wear will burn out!

Have they produced for you the snap sheet or whatever they call it, the computer readout that shows the clutch wear? The only way you're going to burn over half your clutch in 600 miles is driving backwards during rush hour in San Francisco. I suppose having the parking brake slightly engaged might as well but that's going to give you a warning. Something stinks, and it isn't just the clutch.

They (dealer) have told me that it is possible that it is the character of the 599!!!
I am not buying into that, but will give them the opportunity to rectify or replace the clutch. If they decide to charge me for it, i think i will have to take the legal route!
Piper - thanks for your humorous way of explaining how to ruin the clutch!!#

When I purchased my '07 599 in June '12 it had 8624 miles and 79% left on the original clutch. I had it checked last month at 17,009 miles and it had 78% left. Now, I live in the country and don't normally drive the car in traffic, and always pull away from a stop gently and wait until the clutch is fully engaged before laying into the throttle, but still... blowing through a clutch in 600 miles seems absurd.

10% at 34.000 km (first clutch).

You do not need to smoke up the clutch with track days. At least in Europe multi storage car parks do the job just as well, at least in combination with thoughtless operation. Or a single heavy traffic jam on a steeply rising longer highway section.

Not true. We have seen customers with a brand new car destroy the clutch in less than 1000 miles. Sorry but not everyone knows how to drive.
