    This is for an Alfa 8C, but I think the gearbox is similiar to a 599. There is an electrical sensor that screws into the side of the gearbox just above the 22 mm Fill Plug on the passenger side. What is this sensor for? I am guessing it is the sender for the speedometer.

    I have the answer, it is the input shaft revolution counter.
